I found it interesting that the parachute deploys from a compartment on the side of the capsule and not from the top.

We were coming back into town on Pleasant Valley Road which runs through the Orchard Range, a military playground where they practice gunnery and combined operations so they know what they are doing in air/ground operations. It's not restricted but the do want you to stay in your car when they're doing things. Coming in on the back of a flatbed truck we saw a white, flattish cone shaped device, said JPL in places. You bet it peaked our curiosity. Turned out it was the Mars Lander Aeroshroud. They brought it here to drop test. So cool
