This project started as distraction for other more serious projects such as my L3 pursuit, and Bryce's Handicap Record Quest: NSL 2024. What else are you supposed to do in the dark wet winter of the Pacific Northwest when you have an idle 3D printer?

Bryce showed up to our February Monthly Washington Aerospace club meeting with the start of this project with the first 3D printed segments for this project, I couldn't resist and offered to help and challenge myself with some 3D printing.

So, here's our group project, a 1/6th scale version of the Crew dragon prototype used for the Pad abort test on May 6, 2015:

The model above is the basis of this project and was used to source components for 3D printing. Since we don't currently have access to a 3D printer capable of printing a 24" x 24", the capsule section was divided into 13 components. This comprised of 3 horizontal rings that were further divided into 4 pedals plus the nose. The component sizes were based the maximum printable dimensions of our printers. The real dragon capsule has 8 super Draco thrusters grouped in pairs. We have 8 38MM motor mounts in place of the super drago's at just the right angle to have the exhaust clear the capsule and body below:

We the rough design completed; printing started as did the challenges:

But with a little tunning, we each started having some success:
