You got it backwards. Filler, sand, prime, sand, paint. I don't expect the filler to stick well to paint.

You haven't been reading the thread. That's what he's going to find out, and we're all a little curious how it turns out.

I'm with you, I don't expect it to work well at all, but after Odo does it we'll know and won't have to assume. I've had builds where I've decided to add more filler after painting and have sanded all the paint off first just to be sure. And I'd be surprised if nobody else has tried what he's about to do, they just haven't reported it anywhere I've seen so this will be educational.

Looking forward to the results Odo!

The filler is onto the painted white plank of balsa. (I added some artificial dents and dings to it(
How long should I wait for it to dry?

Got me. I took a few days off this thread. Be certain to abuse the fin a little bit after you're done to simulate normal handling.

I would give it a day to be sure.

There's at least one benefit I see to this if it does stick to paint well (which I don't think it will, but we'll see) - your balsa probably won't warp while it dries like it does with bare wood.

Im going to test it on a spare balsa board.
Going to paint it white, let it dry, and then try the filler on it. Im definitely not doing it on my Soyuz without any knowledge as to what would happen.

There ya go... thinking like a rocket engineer-- "If in doubt-- TEST!!!"

Later! OL JR :)

Did you thin the filler?? Shouldn't take too long to dry-- a few hours most likely-- you'll know when its hard and dry-- feel it, no moisture, feels hard and chalky, you should be good...

Actually the thinner the filler, the faster it dries... seems counterintuitive, but the thick pasty stuff straight out of the can goes on thicker and thus takes longer to dry. When thinned with water down to the consistency of hot dog mustard, and brushed on, it goes on thinner and thus dries faster.

Of course, the paint will seal off the balsa grain from the filler moisture, preventing the uptake of moisture from the filler into the balsa... but of course, CA treatments do the same thing-- and that's what I typically use anyway... I don't think that it'll take particularly long... couple hours to an afternoon just to be sure...

If in doubt, wait...

Later! OL JR :)

Finished the experiment, nothing is wrong from what I can see, it stuck to it fine, and filled all of the gouges I made in the wood, so I guess its okay to do?

So you painted a raw piece of balsa, and after it dried you covered it with CWF?

It makes me want to try it on a scrap, where half is painted to begin with, and then the entire piece is covered with CWF, sanded, primered, sanded, primered, sanded, and painted. The only thing that will tell me is if there IS a finished piece of balsa that gets a ding and needs to be filled I won't have to sand off all the paint.

When starting a new build I'd still start with CWF.

I'd say you're good to go with repairing your fins with CWF and making them look better.

You may want to consider filling your tube spirals before painting them too, have you noticed them on your finished rockets yet? Do they bug you too?

Ive seen the spirals yeah, It doesnt bother me TOO much but I guess getting rid of them would be nice.
:)
Also I sanded it and everything reprimed repainted and I dont see anything wrong with it.

Just thought Id let you guys know its coming along nicely!
Ive got the nosecone all filler(ed?) and sanded and painted :) The paints still drying but its looks a hell of a lot better then it did! There is absolutely NO dents/grain visible, its great :D
No pics yet, Im not finished with all of it :)

GLad to hear it... KUTGW...

I hope you realize of course that it's about ten times easier when you do it during construction of the rocket BEFORE you finish and paint it, than afterwards...

I wouldnt doubt it.
I suffer from chronic Rocket Ecstasy.
I finished the rocket doing only what the instructions say to do and then think of all the amazing things it could become after its already done, instead of doing all of it during the construction.
Sigh.

Odo...for me, the fun part of a build is doing the research and trying to plan out what I want it too look like...then seeing how close to that I could come. Dr. Zooch kits really allow you to do as much as you want. One of my favorite Zooch kits is his Lifting Body. I like to build them and paint the orbiters like WWII fighters and stuff.

After a masking tape fail Ive gotten dark green blushing over my white nose cone...
Sigh.
Gotta wait for all the current wet paint to dry now before fixing it :/

Heres a picture of the white nosecone for you guys :)
No Grain yay.jpg
As you can see after the filler there is little to no grain at all! Yay!
Also...
Lookie lookie what came in the mail :D
Vostok.jpg
Gotta finish my Soyuz first though.

Nice!!! the Zooch Vostok is a fun kit...I actually like the lines of the Vostok better than the Soyuz....Mushtang has a great build thread on the Vostok!

Ive read his build over and over :) I absolutely love russian R7 boosters and derivatives of it. Hence why I've got the Soyuz and the Vostok. I dont think I'll be getting the R7 Luna or Sputnik anytime soon, but who knows. I was going to try to tackle a Mercury Redstone and Jupiter C after these 2. But if I make a Jupiter C Ive gotta make a Sputnik obviously!
So many scale models, and so much time in which to make them

the Zooch Luna is a fun kit too....I have his Sputnik still on the build pile. I am going to try a Zooch Lifting Body next though...that is also a great kit! Its one of my favorite Zooch kits.

Im not much of a shuttle hugger myself (Idk where I picked that term up, probably some other forum not as good as this one " so Im not too interested in his lifting body. Its a great kit from what I hear, just not my cup of tea.
Anyway. The Vostok is going to be a special build for me because Im going to slow the heck down and do every bit how I want it, Im pretty inspired by your Vostok build so Im going to paint it with the frosted tanks as well. Im also going to try to use your build thread as a reference when I attempt to make all the tiny cardstock details (Hope you dont mind) Ive even got a spare sheet of ribbed paper from my SLS so I can use that for the corrugated area of the top of the Vostok fairing.
Looking forward to the Vostok build :) Will definitely make a build thread.

As for my Soyuz, all thats left to do is to repaint that orange band (it chipped for the THIRD time!! Does anyone know whats up with it? It always chips in the same pattern too. 3 eleptical circles next to each other) And then Im reapplying the decals to the Soyuz fairing and thatll be that :) The chances of it flying again arent too high, after losing the whole engine clip assembly I doubt the structurally integrity of the new super glued one. If you look at the first picture I posted on this thread you can clearly see the engine clip attached securely with glue, 2 layers of masking tape, and the reinforcement band, the end of the clip also goes into the tube as Im sure you know. Yet somehow the whole engine clip came out cleanly without leaving a scratch. Baffles me.

Odo...that's great! I hope my build thread helps. Luke had some terrific information when I was buiilding my Vostok. Luke is just one of the resources of this board..the man knows rockets!! there just aren't a lot of great detailed pictures out there so I kinda winged it when trying to add some extra detail to her. She is a great kit and I am sure you'll have a blast building it!

Redstone and Jupter C are fun kits. I tell you what, the Zooch Jupter C pretty much screams off the pad..that thing gets small real quick. On my first flight it flew perfectly....but the estes ejection charge was so strong I thought the thing exploded up there...blew my Explorer satellite competely off the bird..never saw it again....sent it into orbit I am pretty sure..I had to budl another with some extra dowel I had. That is one of the Zooch kits that I want to try again...I just like the look of the old Redstone missile.

On the topic of Vostoks:

I just realized that I never actually posted pics of the finished build or updated this thread to say it was finished, so what few of you are actually reading this, here ya gooo:
So after filling the nosecone again and doing minor paint adjustments, then reapplying the decals, Ive finally finished it :)

Okay I really am finished now!.jpg

Thanks all for help! Especially Luke and NJrick :)
After I figure out my vagabonds paint mystery Ill be moving on to an attempt to make a really detailed Vostok. Hopefully that will end well.
