I do see in picture #3 you did catch that high tech method of ground secure, wind stabilization and assured pad release on the tail section. No fins, nose cone, centering rings, blast deflector, positive motor retention, wadding, launch lug, packed or designated recovery system. I could have just stuck the launch rod in the dirt, but that would have been as primitive as can be and with out a single luxury. A kind of pop bottle rocket, kite, streamer rocket, canted odd roc type thingy.

It flew to about 700-800 feet and the tail flutter just did in the end segment. It could have a much longer tail. This one was to test how high it would go and how much a short tail would slow it down on decent. This tail is the shortest I would fly it on.

Nifty!

How long was the tail? I'm guessing ~6'?

The tail was just a tad over 6 feet long. After two flights the flutter on the end has done in the end segment on each flight. Decent is a bit fast on six feet of tail but the styrofoam takes the impact well. The tail could be much longer and if I build the Mark 2 I would go for 12 feet with the segments simply taped together and accordioned under the rocket on a flat surface. Mark 2 will also have some red streamers up front for a blood burp effect and will hopefully act to horizontal out the body on decent.

I never thought I’d say this about a model rocket but that is gross.

My kids and I had the distinct pleasure of arriving just in time to see the Tapeworm fly.

I mean, how many people in the entire world can say that the very first club launch they ever witnessed was a flying hermaphroditic scolex-ed proglottid-laden parasitic... thing? Five? Six?

In any case, it makes me proud. So thanks. :D

I think you guys are unique in saying your first outing involved fun parasitic worm flying for the entire family! Safe to say not many three canted motor tapeworm rockets have flown. But this one is real fun and if it gets even one kid or family interested in the highly diverse field of model rocketry it is worth it. All it takes is some recycled parts from an old rocket, a trip to Hobby Lobby with the 40% coupon and two recycled plastic water bottles.
