Somewhere in West Central Indiana yesterday the ground shook and the shockwaves reverberated across the plains.......A young EX'r had tried his hand at mixing Tiger Tail and, stuffing it into a 98mm case....Things went wrong...:facepalm:

See, it wouldn't be the first time my PERSONAL STAND has felt the full force of serious "Whumpage" but, i wanted to post some before and, after pictures of the structural damage to make someones mind more at ease. 003 (2).jpg

Of course there was some (ALOT) heat, some violence, some (More than ALOT) language...etc...but, things always "straighten" out in the end........004 (2).jpg

Don't worry young man it wouldn't be the first time that's happened. Make sure that you....
1. Regroup.
2. Work on the details..
3. Ask more questions...then, more questions to the ones you trust...
4. Go a little SMALLER next time....

There is a discussion on the research forum, but it was due to insufficient mixing which yielded soft propellant and lead to immediate grain collapse. There is absolutely nothing left of the rocket. Like Gus said, there was a TON of energy released in this explosion. Gus, you don't need to cover this up for me, I don't feel so bad about it anymore. Something that you have to do in this hobby is take failure with a grain of salt, or something like that. I, for one, am going to move on and try again (with this failure in mind) and do it right next time, but I won't move quit as fast and I will focus on the details. The thing that really sucks is that I lost my level three airframe in the accident, and there is absolutely nothing salvagable. Oh well.......

Any idea why the case let go in the middle instead of the ends where they should?
 
It looks to me that the tube had some good heat to it and just came a part. A guy at Bong on Sat. had the forward end of motor let go and burned out both ends of the tube. all that is left is fiberglass strands in side of the tube.
Manny all you can do is learn and move on.

Any idea why the case let go in the middle instead of the ends where they should?

I blew up, out, and down......

The plate Gus shows is dented from the nozzle being blown down, the nose cone looks like a furball because the forward bulkhead was shot up.

So I got around to pulling all of the wreckage out of my car, and here is what is left of it. My favorite piece are the three parts of the aft end, in the picture you can see the nozzle washer, the snap ring and the flange of the aeropac. The last picture shows a half of a grain.

No Manny, stick with Aerospace, just specialize in Propulsion System Stress Testing and you'll get all "A's". :point:

Say you ONLY have....oh...about $20 in your pocket....This is how you increase your mileage...

Take the bills and, cut them in half up to down in the middle....Roll them up like a cigarette and, stuff them into a shirt pocket....empty cigarette case...whatever....Now your up there in the "First Row" right in sight:pop:.....

She won't know if there $1's -$5's -$10's etc.....but, there's ALOT of them......Now you put one in your mouth like a cigarette....except backwards....YOUR going to get QUITE the show for only 40 or so chances.....

Trust me....You'll be long gone before "Bambi" figures it out!

You might even be trying to find your way back to the Comfort Inn where you USLI Team SHOULD be getting some sleep before their BIG day in the field.....

You can use that case again - just McGyver it up! I had a 98mm hybrid case that let go, case split down the entire side and wrapped itself around the launch rail, backwards. It would not come off. It literally folded in half around the rail opposite side the tear was.

And it make a little bit of noise.

I thought the accepted wisdom in hobby rocketry was to design motor cases that failed in closure retention significantly before the tube failed, to keep spectators safe...I'm less interested in going to TRA research launches, now...I value my life!

....then you should never go to a launch, period. I've seen commercial cases that failed in other ways than closures coming off.

Not only that, but I'd be surprised if Manny had any significant debris that was 50 feet from the pad. Even if it went 100 feet, compare that to the safety distance for a commercial N motor, and you'll find you're plenty safe.

CATO'ing motors is the least of my worries at a launch. As Kevin says the parts just don't go that far. Deployment failures and unstable rockets worry me MUCH more.

The biggest piece of debris that landed furthest away was the nose cone and it only landed maybe 25 feet from the pad. There where tiny bits of fiberglass all over in a 125 foot radius. The pad was definitely at a safe distance.....
 
Ok yeah, I hadn't really thought it through... but the kinetic energy required to get a small piece of aluminum to travel hundreds of feet and only drop a few feet (before hitting the ground) is pretty big.

But in general, why do they certify reloads that aren't designed to fail in the most safe way possible? Is this another facet of trying to apply professional safety standards to a hobby?

Safe distance for an N motor is 1,000 feet. So, your farthest piece went 1/8 of the safe distance.

I'll take that over an N5800 rocket that shredded several thousand feet up, and is coming in ballistic.
