CA,
You are way stronger than I am. I could not resist and jumped right in. I can't wait for this guy to reveal himself. I'll bet it's Obama! From post #94

In the movie, Homer's dreams were NOT unrealistic. His goal was simple and achievable. He wanted to build a rocket. And through trial and error along with increasing his mathematical skills, he did it...

I would imagine this guy would have followed a similar course, perhaps coming to his own conclusion, but we'll never know now.

I actually got in touch with Ky, about my project, he seems interested. I knew I had to get him on board, because he has years of experience and has actually done a good deal of work with rockets for the past few decades.

Instead of talking to KY you should talk to Mr Virgin Galactic he'd be more likely to back you... he's just that crazy and has the money to waste.. Oh wait he already has a rocket project going.. you might have to wait for a while./

You're not giving credence to the possible or likely here. Most of us ride on the backs of what has already been achieved. We are modelers here and we go with what we know works. Some people are more than that. These are the people that we learn to admire later on because they were right when everyone else thought they were wrong. Look at Einstein.

I guess the point is, someone I was interested in listening to is now gone because people drove him away.

If we were all sitting around in a pub, and he was treated like this by the people I was sitting with, I would have asked them to be quiet, I want to hear him, for whatever reason I might have.

It was rude towards me.

OK, I'll bite---it is doable and has been done before for the same--or nearly the same cost as the estimate. The year was around 1900--1st men.jpg1st men.png---cost was about 60,000 US bucks. Based on inflation that's about 1.5/1.6 mill----problem is, the formula for Cavorite seems to have been lost to history---It did cover the whole- balloon /lox /guidance/storage/launch complex/permits/and tax write offs though !!!---just sayin---

Oh, I don't think he is gone. He's sidelining to see where all this goes. Smart people study things. People that think they're smart are likely to respond without hesitance.

Maybe an MMX... at 100 ft/sec initial velocity it would get there in about 146 days, probably a little quicker due to the pull of the moon's gravity. Of course, NASA and the ESA might not be real keen on having BP in the cargo bay, assuming it could be lit in space.

An external science experiment on the ISS could be a small box with a rail launched model rocket in it with enough thrust to send it on a long outward spiral to the moon. It would be a great college competition. Maybe 270-360 days to reach the moon if it was HPR. (Just a guess on the time frame)

I hope you got my point.

ISS launch? Um only if you want to screw up their orbit. To go from LEO to break orbit and get to the moon you need a lot of delta v. Nearly 12000 ft/s! Considering the exercise equipment is on isolation dampners to avoid messing their orbit up anything leaving the station with high velocity will need to be small. Obviously the entire 12k ft/s does not have to come while connected to the station...

Well seeing that we are now aiming for objects beyond the moon why go to Mars again? As stated we've already sent a few Rovers there... Why not explore something more interesting... Europa? Perhaps Titan?

Escape velocity from earth is about 11.2 km/s, but you only need to get close due to the moon's gravity. Look up Apollo 8 on Wikipedia. Another, slightly less energetic, fuel source would be hypergolic fuels. They are self igniting and can be stored at atmospheric pressure and room temperature (no pressurization needed). Don't forget about cosmic radiation. Conventional electronics won't last long out there. You need aviation grade or better electronics, otherwise your semiconducting material will become insulators. Other than that, I can't offer any meaningful advice--not that what I did offer was meaningful.

I've been doing a bit of reading on escape velocity.. Correct me if i'm wrong.. From what I've read you don't have to reach the specific velocity to escape the gravitional pull of earth. So long have a strong enough motor and enough thrust to push you beyond the gravitional pull you're good. I should say enough thrust and a long enough burn.

Now I don't know what would be easier reaching the 11 km/s mark or having a booster to push you beyond.

Yeah I know I can't wait for it to happen either. I really want them to discover microbes some place and if Eruopa does have the suspected oceans its a great candidate. Heck I'd even settle for them finding fossil evidence of microbes on mars.. Just to know that life pops up that frequently would be amazing to know!

Yes, it's called bullying. Grown men feeling good about themselves, at their computers making fun of some kid who posted something on a forum. They could just move along but they need to stop and show how smart they are. You may have missed the thread where they were publicly making fun of BlackBrandt. Definitely a negative attitude, not how to welcome newcomers to the hobby.

I didn't see this other thread you're referring to so I can't comment on that, but in this case has the reaction been overly negative or bullying? Maybe. But the original post was pretty outlandish, and his subsequent comments didn't help much either. It doesn't really matter what age you are, if you're going to speak in the public square it's a social contract. You have our time and attention, we have the right to comment on your use of it. If it's crazy talk, keep your notions to yourself or be prepared for some heckling. And be ready to prove the angry mob wrong. It does happen, a small percentage of crazy people are brilliant. Most are just crazy. But coddling foolishness as a rule is no better than derision.

Indeed. Even to know that life pops up infrequently elsewhere would be amazing :)
