Mention of "On The Beach" triggers a very unsettling memory. I think it was this movie that contained a segment where a sailor is afloat in a small boat or raft. He left the submarine to go ashore to inspect a deserted San Francisco. When he paddled back out to sea to rendezvous with the submarine, he spoke to the Captain (Gregory Peck) via a speaker/microphone on the extended periscope. The sub was submerged. The sailor said that he didn't want to re-enter the sub, preferred to go back ashore and die from radiation there. The Captain reluctantly agreed. The sight of the periscope protruding from the water and "talking" to the man was very, very weird. Coupled with knowing that all of humanity was going to die, it terrified me. All the more so because it seemed very plausible when I was a kid watching it during the Cold War.
