If I get sufficiently over this cold I'm battling, I'll be headed for surgery Tuesday, followed by a few weeks of being parked in the recliner. I've got a good book pile ready to go, but could use some movie or TV DVD ideas, preferably titles that are available on Netflix.

Movies/TV I've liked:
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars
Original Star Trek (I've not seen the others)
Chuck
MASH

Old musicals, plus of course occasional chick flicks like Mamma Mia. :pop:

Thanks, Lisa :snowman:

If you have access to a service like Netflix, you can really go for the series stuff.

We are about 75% through the Babylon 5 series

Other suggestions:

Dr Who - pick a year
Sports Night
Eureka (ScyFy TV series) - this one is really great!

Dead men don't wear plaid. A Steve Martin movie. One of the most innovative and funny movies ever made.

My Favorite year.

Fringe, Season 1 is available on DVD

Day the earth stood still (original)

War of the worlds (Original)

The Invaders, 1967 sci fi tv show

UFO, 1969 British TV show.

Enjoy!

I loved the new Star Trek movie, If you liked the original series (capt Kirk) its perfect.

Depends on what you like. BUT I love "Guys" movies so here are a few I think are must see's

The Boondock saints.

Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels.

The Italian Job

Plunket and McClain

Also when it comes out, you HAVE to see District 9...

I also love superhero movies. so if you have not seen them here are a few

Iron Man (it was better than I ever expected)

Both batman movies (the new ones)

The hulk.

if you like apocalyptic sci fi stuff check out

Doomsday, and Death Racers..

as for TV series stuff I recently got the old

Alien Nation series to watch, I was pretty enjoyable. takes you right back to the 80's

and if you need a good laugh, I LOVE "TITUS"
(I went to about 75% of the tapings of the show) Makes you feel good about your father son relationship. deffinatley good for some grate laughs.

I have about 2000 DVD's in my collection, so I will say this I like movies MOST movies so what I may like may be different that what you like. but I am always willing to tell anyone what I thought was great.

Heal up fast!

Two years ago on Superbowl Sunday, the local Fox station ran The Arrow: a Canadian film about the Avro CF-105 starring Dan Ackroyd. Yep, there's rockets in it. Found it on Ebay.

BEWARE: The series is VERY VERY addictive. Start with Season 1 and proceed with caution.

I will second Waking Ned Devine! A great small movie

Also see if NetFlix has The big night. Another really nice small movie.

If you liked Star Trek TOS, Star Trek TNG season 3-5 are great. Also Enterprise season 4 is very good. If you have not seen the Deep Space 9 episode Trials and Tribbilations you should try.

If you have high speed internet download the fan Trek episodes from Starship Exeter, Star Trek Phase 2, and Starship Farragut. Some are very good, some not so good, but all are interesting.

The old standard: 2001:A Space Odyssey

I'll second the Dr Who recommendations. We've also enjoyed the spinoffs: Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Did somebody mention "The Right Stuff"? An excellent movie except for the shameful portrayal of Gus Grissom.

These are the basic yet fundamental building blocks for any Sci-Fi/Horror movie collection.

2001 a Space Odyssey
When Worlds Collide
Day the Earth Stood Still (Original)
Day of the Triffids
War of the Worlds (Original)
Soylent Green

Peter Cushing and Chistopher Lee:
Horror of Dracula
Dracula has Risen from the Grave
The mummy
Curse of Frankenstein

Series:
Red Dwarf (All eight seasons)
Babylon 5
Big Bang Theory
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits (Original)

And, of course, the legendary "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan. It is on HULU at the moment so you can catch it for free.
Goy up this morn with a touch of the flu so this isn't everything your should see, just all I have the energy to post. More later today.

Hope your recovery goes well!

"EDIT" AACCKK! I forgot Apollo 13!!
Geeze, I am sick..

That Movie would be much higher on my list, but for the unconscionable treatment of Gus, A true hero.

Except for Dr. Who, it seems you and I have the same tastes in movies!

And I have to admit I'm a bit soured on Chuck Yeager after his hateful comments about Scott Crossfield.

How about the "From the Earth to the Moon" series? That was good!

Oh, oh! My favorite "true space docu-drama" has got to be The Dish.

The 12 hour "From Earth to the Moon" series + a read/re-read of James Michener's "Space" may help burn up some down time.

"Something about Mary" will put a few grins on most as well.

... GalaxyQuest

I'll second that one, absolutely hilarious... On second thought, if you'll have stitches from your surgery then wait a few days

other funny Sci-Fi type stuff:

The Fifth Element
Tank Girl
Space Balls

As far as Old Musicals:

Brigadoon - Gene Kelley, Van Johnson, Cyd Charisse
Guys and Dolls - Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra - AWESOME!

New Stuff:

There's a new TV series based on the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind called Legend of the Seeker. Netflix has season 1 and part of Season 2, those were pretty good IMHO.

Hope everything goes well for you! :hohoho:

If you like SciFi, get a copy of the Dune miniseries done by the SciFi Channel. Avoid like the plague the movie version -- it's horrible, awful, terrible, and a whole bunch of other negative adjectives.

But the SciFi Channel did an excellent job with it.

I second The Italian Job, My Favorite Year ("I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star"), and District 9 (I really like this movie). And I third Waking Ned Divine.

See if you can find a movie called Sorcerer. It has nothing to do with sorcery. It stars Roy Scheider (from JAWS fame). Came out in the mid to late 70's. A very interesting and intriguing movie.

From the imdb website:

I thought Roy Scheider did a great job in 2010. I like 2010 much more than 2001. Good thing, eh?

f:

The Fifth Element
Tank Girl
Space Balls

:hohoho:

I gotta second those. Fifth element is a top 10 Tank girl is one of those obscure movies that should have done way better than it did.

on those lines how about cherry 2000 ?

Do you like submarine movies? I loved crimson tide, the enemy below and of course hunt for red october...

I also have most of the original The prisoner On tape. I loved the series. the made for TV movie was HORRIBLE. I was so upset they screwed it up like they did.

If you like the horror sci Fi's another to add is

Deep Rising..

also looking back there is an older one called "The Arrival" then looking WAY back, "Outland"

I know way to many to watch them all. but hey.

A nice thing about Netflix is that it allows you to sample a TV series without purchasing a box set of the whole first season. You can just rent the first disc of the first season and see if you like the show.

I'll warn you though, the first season of Babylon 5 is dreadfully bad. But, if you like Asimov-like science fiction that's more about people than spaceships, stick with it because it gets much better in the later seasons.

Also, check out Netflix streaming. It's nice not to have to wait for DVDs in the mail.
