We go camping in the Boundary waters every year. (in the summer...) When we go off the Gunflint Trail, the route takes you up the North Shore of Lake Superior to Grand Marais. From Grand Marais, the Gunflint Trail goes WNW away from the lake, and climbs several hundred feet. When we are coming back down, I always note the temperature on the cars thermometer at the top, and then tell the kids to keep an eye on it for the next mile or two. Typically, it's in the upper 80s at the top and mid 50s at the bottom, near the lake. Feels good that time of year!
Yep, lake effect -- it's like having a giant heat/cold sink nearby, depending on the season.

Ashland, WI is right on Lake Superior. In the middle of winter, it's not uncommon for them to have temperatures 15 to 20 degrees warmer than places less than an hour away.

That said, in the summer, if the wind shifts out of the north and the wind starts coming off of Superior, it can cool down in a hurry! :)
