Adam told me about this thread and ask if I would mind posting some pictures of my level 1 attempt. I'm happy to report that three weeks ago I was lucky enough to get my level 1 cert on my first try. It was also the maiden flight of my Zephyr built over 2 years ago.

Why so long a wait? First of all our launch sight and club ROC is 4 hours away from my home in Ventura. That's one way. When I first planned the trip out 2 years ago the fires blocked our way to the sight. Even at that it was just not safe to try and get back out there in the fires that year.

So next year I get ready to go in March and Covid strikes. All launches for the year were canceled by the BLM. We weren't allowed to have launches until three weeks ago and even then it was only members of the ROC allowed.

We loaded up the motorhome and the 2 dogs and our granddaughter and headed out to the Lucerne dry lake bed the night before the launch and camped out. I got up with the first flight, had my tea and breakfast and headed out to registration at 7 am. The crew for the ROC was very helpful and nice. They helped me fill out all the paper work and checked out the Zephyr and told me I was good to go.

I used a single use White Lighting H100W-14A and drilled the delay for 7 seconds. It turned out to be just right. Then they had me go out to the H pad. It was the furthest out of all the pads and a low walk. I talked to the camera on the way out. Talked about how I felt. Normally this would have all been shot on our professional 4K HD camera with Mary shooting. We do a show every week about our studio work at our film effects studio and make films. But on this day I just didn't want any distraction and remained focused on the task at hand. I shot everything with my iPhone for simplicity.

The flight went perfect, even textbook. We launched in 14-17 mph winds too. The rocket ended up going pretty far down range so I had that long chase as the winds kept dragging it across the desert until it found a slight ditch and came to rest. My granddaughter got there first and a friend that was down range already getting ready for it. Launching in such high winds isn't advisable but after all the time I waited and long drive I was about to be detoured by weather.

The result was so desert rash but nothing that would prevent me from fly a second flight so they gave me my level 1 cert and patch. It was a happy day for sure.

Hi Steve
Congratulations on your cert. Frank Kosdon, one of the all time legendary rocketeers lived in Ventura. Another great rocketry organization for you is Tripoli Central Calif. About the same distance as ROC and many of the same people. Maybe we'll see you at one or the other!!

This was mine from a couple weeks ago. A MadCow Super DX3 called Blackfish. I overbuilt and certified on an I245 with an RRC2L in single deploy configuration with motor back up. Flew to 872ft and perfect recovery. Next two flights were on I284s to 1794ft and perfect dual deploy recoveries.

Guess I could throw my L3 in here, tho it's to the left always. Rocketry Warehouse 8" Mad Maxx. AT M1939W. 8850ft. Landed only 1/2ish mile away. It still hasn't been painted yet... Waiting for inspiration, yeah, that's it, inspiration... But luckily it wasn't. I zippered it last Airfest I was at (LDRS). So zipper is being repaired without having to affect paint. And upper 48" BT will be swapped out for original 32" BT.

Here's my L1. LOC Precision 3" Forte. AT I140W.
Apogee was roughly 3340 ft. The parachute was motor deployed. No back ups since I couldn't figure out how to electronics. Landed around 1/4 of a Mile away since the parachute was deployed at apogee. Screenshot_20210411-213837_Photos.jpg

Just hit NAR lvl 2 at LDRS 39 on Saturday!

Apogee Katana with a J250-12. Just over 3,000 feet and 365mph. I used a 60" LOC chute to ensure a gentle landing on the hard salt flats.

Here is a link to the onboard camera footage:

This was my L1. LOC Cyclotron 3" on Aerotech H135W-14A. NOTRA Launch in Amherst, OH. Landed about 400ft from the flightline. JLCR worked great. 60" Rocketman chute for nice slow touchdown. Unfortunately the Flightsketch Altimeter didn't record the flight data.

Here is the video of flight. (Sorry for out of focus at intro. Switched to manual, and had to adjust to infinity. Then all was good.)

Congratulations on the L1
Looked like a nice straight flight
And yea not to far for the landing even better
Great looking bird

This isn't my actual L2 cert flight. I had to fly it again on the same motor as I wanted to actually watch my cert flight NOT through a camera view finder. Same rocket, same motor though. Madcow Torrent, J350, dual deploy, 3600 ft. Cert flight was at Midwest Power (10/30/2021). Photo below at Tripoli Mid-Ohio. Thanks goes out to both venues for letting me fly there.

Any new cert flights out there to share
I posted these in a separate thread, but here ya go:

4th time was the charm for my L2 at Spaceport Rocketry Association on 1/15/2022. The first attempt gave me a crash course in material strength and aerodynamic forces. The second attempt taught me a lot about descent rates and parachute sizes. The third attempt reminded me that anything can happen despite our best efforts. The fourth attempt went well. CTI J285 to 4191' in a Madcow 2.6" FG Pike with a redundant dual deploy av bay by SMT designs.

Yea I totally understand that feeling
I have plans for L2 as well and the test is always on the back of my mind
But studying and knowing as much as Possible can only be a good thing

Ill be going for my L2 at springfest in las vegas. I have a hard believing no one has trouble passing the Written test. Thats what I’m afraid of.
