Got any tips or pointers on how to get a nice straight and square root edge on balsa fins?

Seems like mine always end up kind of rounded from stem to stern.

I use a sanding block, also have tried putting the sandpaper on the table and sand on that.

Short of using a table sander that is :D

Fixturing is the key. You need a perpendicular surface in which to place the fin in relation to the sandpaper.

You can build your own with some scrap pieces of lumber or, as you eluded to, buy a small bench sander..... which if you do, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

What is a shooting board?

I've learned a 737 isn't a good plane... And I've learned an ironing board makes a great shooting board. All from the internet, so it must be true.

That all sounds really pricey though.

Place wood on table, use table edge as guide for sanding block. Works great for bevels also.
