I only have access to the windows version of Google Earth, so this is in principle what you would do in windows. Hopefully there is something comparable in MAC OS...

Then pull down the list and select 'GPS'...

Now your valid NMEA files are available for selection...

Thanks again for the input - I do have a PC laptop also so will switch to that for .nmea file work.
