I want to make an upscale of the Custom Rockets Redliner. I bought this when I was a kid and loved every bit of it. Wish I never threw it away. Key points for the details

  • Dual deployment
  • AV Bay
  • 54 & 38 mm MMT
  • 4'' dia
  • Really nice paint job
  • L1 & L2 use
  • Built to last
  • Using the best parts I can get

All the info on the stock product I could find. https://www.rocketreviews.com/redliner---custom-rockets.html

I had started a topic here on TRF and was advised how to work out the upscale. The size of this beast will be 4'' dia and 83'' long. Weight is unknown just yet.

I found this cheeky drawing of dual deployment and will use it as my base for laying the sections out.

A CTI Pro 54 6GXL is 25.14'' long, so my booster/rear/arft section will have to be at least 30''. Nice clean look as it comes apart i’m thinking.

Overall length 83''
NC is 12'' long, so 83 - 12 = 71
Minus the booster @ 30 leaves 41
AV bay has a 1'' band so we minus that 40
We then split the tube ether side of the AV bay 40 / 2 = 20

So tubes lengths are

  • Booster 30''
  • Main bays 20''
  • NC 12''
  • AV bay 1''
  • TOTAL 83''

This also fits nicely in my car :)

So now parts. Searching TRF and finding my feet again Blue Tube 2.0 looks and sound cool. It's cost effective, good weight, reviews say's it's good. I have been dealing with Dave at Always Ready Rocketry https://www.alwaysreadyrocketry.com/ He's been a huge help with getting the drawing correct, sizes, parts. He is currently building the kit up for me now. This makes shipping cheap to the UK. All parts for the build are present, cut to size so saves weight. Plus dealing with one person gets the build right. Parts list below

  • 1 3.9” x 30” Airframe
  • 2 3.9 x 20” Airframe
  • 1 54mm x 26” Airframe/MMT
  • 1 3.9” x 8” Coupler
  • 3 3.9 x 54 Centering Rings
  • 3 3.9” AF Bukplate with eye bolt
  • 1 3.9” E-Bay
  • 1 3.9” Ogive Nosecone
  • 1 3.9/54 Aeroopack Tailcone Retainer Blk
  • 1 54/38 Adapter
  • 3 CNC Slots
  • 3 CNC Fins

Dave's a busy man and has given a rough ETA for March the 4th. So what to do when waiting....SHOPPING

Again TRF and what people here say was the answer for my next product. Shockcords. One name and one product stood out, Onebadhawk https://www.rocketryforum.com/member.php?12088-onebadhawk His product is here https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?58794-Shock-Cords-w-Presewn-Loops

A few mails and PM's with Ted and I'm in aw of this guy. Helpful, funny and down to earth. I even called him, now resulting in a much need trip to meet for a beer. He suggested his 1'' wide Kevlar, 30' long, 2 loops. I took his word and the order was placed. Now this guy is crystal clear and honest. Scans of paper work sent over. He apologised as he was caught short on the shipping quote. Not once did Ted ask for the extra, he was going to pay this. I sent over the $20 to Ted's amazement and non stop thanks. 5 days, yes fokes 5 days latter and I've something I'd never get made in the UK arrive wrapped & packed as if it was your 1st born .....

I'd only ordered the 2. Teddy went and threw in one of his other product for free. What a cool surprise and nice gift. Huge thanks to Ted for the service.

Been thinking about the finish on this beats. The UK has an okay'ish car modding scene which means some trick paint jobs or means of giving amazing out of this world finishes. DipThis https://www.dipthis.co.uk/ has the biggest name currently and I've found a finishe I like for the NC.

Bushed Aluminum https://www.dipthis.co.uk/shop/metal/brushed-aluminium/

Have sent them a mail, they want to see the NC and will say yes or no. So far the word is yes with it being dipped twice, one to cover each side.

So I'm now looking at little bits and bobs. Hardware fittings for recovery, recovery electronics, motor cases (29, 38, 54mm), body filler, sanding sealer, the best epoxys and glues.

Also looking to make a PVC stand for the build, hoping there is a link on here.

Thanks

Pete

Well, you've certainly done your homework. This is going to be one helluva nice build! I've always liked the simple, clean lines of the Redliner. For what it's worth, I've heard that you should put sanding sealer on Blue Tube before you paint, because it's sensitive to humidity. That's what I did on my one and only Blue Tube build.

These are the PVC stands I made, from ideas on the forum. They're simple to make and have worked out very well for me.

Just found some threads on here, mainly this one https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?20117-Rocket-Build-Prep-Stand

Have found a new supply of the stuff and got some on order.

  • PVC Plain Cap 32mm X8
  • PVC Elbow 90 Deg 32mm X4
  • PVC Cross 32mm X4
  • PVC Tee Pl 32mm X4
  • Pipe 32mm 5M X2

Going kinda big, 6 section that hold the body, 61'' long over all. Having it delivered to work so I can get it cut to length as 5M will not fit in my car!

Agreed with the top tip regarding the tubing. I plan to seal it 1st, fill it and smooth it off then build it. Might make some crude tube holder the allows the tube to spin held on the ends so I can fill and smooth it off. Homework, nah lots to learn so any tip are welcome! The classic look grabs me as a kid and 20 years + latter again!

Subscribed! The Redliner was/is my favorite model to fly on our low power field. Never thought of doing an upscale before.
Hmmm.....

Have just ordered some Armaflex for the PVC stand. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201005931719?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

ID is 30 mm and tubing is 32 mm so might need some spray to get it on. I use to ride a lot of MTB's back in the day and we used hairspray to get our grips on and off as it's cellulose based it's not harming the materials and evaporates well. Thankfully my partner and our 14 year old daughter has this item in large stock.

This place is great, forum to the rescue again. https://www.rocketryforum.com/showt...s-the-best-altimeter-on-the-market#post675818

So just placed my order

  • 1 x Mounting hardware
  • 1 x USB data transfer kit
  • 1 x StratoLogger Altimeter
  • 1 x Amplified External Beeper

$135.67 shipped to the UK which is good as that's £83.58 GBP. UK shop has the item onsale for £75 let alone the other bits.

Happy days

Now to find switch, battery, wiring harness. Thinking Lipo

Don't forget the customs clearance charge plus 20% tax... I find that it's more or less the same in UK and US for small orders. Support local vendors :)

PVC tubing has arrived. Had this delivered to work as it's 5m lengths. Got it all cut to size. Now to play with the base size layout. Have feeling 4 section might been too much.

8 X 8''
8 X 14''

Nice, I like the colors of the tubing and fittings. Are you going to pad it?

What are you keeping in this ammo box?

Reloads & motors as per the old UK laws. I still believe it should be this way today than a plastic bag which the law now allows!!!

I don't believe that AP motors are technically explosives.

If you are keeping black powder for ejection charges it has to be in a plain screwed together 18mm plywood box with specific measured clearance s inside. The UK police are strict about this.

I don't believe that AP motors are technically explosives.

They are if they are over 1kg net propellant each. In practice this means you need UK police paperwork for anything more than about 50% K.

AP motors smaller than that and estes BP motors don't need special storage. Any quantity of loose black powder requires 18mm screwed plywood box.

I've seen small 1/2 A's to 24'' firework shells (my 2nd job is a pyro hence the nickname) and i rather have a box that i know is safe should some muppet try and mess about with or around them. Plus I've my kids to think about. The old school law and rules on storing them where and still are the best. Overall it's more for my kids.

Plus note, Dave has sent me the invoice so just need to make payment and we will then have all my goodies here to build the beast!!!

Small update. Just had mail saying
PerfectFlite has shipped a package to you on 03/05/2014 via U.S. Postal Service First-Class Package Int'l Service

Not sure how it's taken 3 day to process but it's on it's way at last.

Common.... I have shipped & received from international. That's pretty standard, usually it's the custom & tax forms that must clear before shipped. 3 days is fairly quick from my experience. If you get it in 7-10 days from ordering....that's blazing fast based on my experience.

Rubbish, you fill the customs form in there and then job done. I've imported and exported over 10 years. I ordered Sunday evening and it's only been processed on the 3rd day kinda takes the mick. We will see how long she now takes.

Some parts have arrived and allowed me to get on. 1st up was the PVC stand. The foam arrived, so I got that cut into sections. The PVC cement came out again. Not all of it is glued. Each small X and large X are glue as are the caps. The 2 T's are glued along there length. The 90* are glued alternatively on there lengths. Thus allowing me to take the apart, transport but the slight twist/stretch/pressure keeps it all together. I did have to cut 2'' off the large X section for them to fit my saw horse, the tabs on the end of horse flick up and stop the unit sliding off the edge. Pics will show what I mean. Saw horse I got off eBay for £20 delivered.

Sadly not rockets to hand...my RC plane will do

My last item caused a stir but having seen what happens when it goes wrong and how we all were effected when so say experts added water to something they shouldn't i'm happy with my tin.

I'll take this with me to work on Monday and have a chippy there made me a thin plywood box to line it. Then have my graphix deparment apply 3 of the stickers properly, they got jig and stuff. I just want it looks smart!

Tracking shows my goodies from Dave are currently: ISC SAN FRANCISCO (USPS) Arrived at Sort Facility

The items from PerfectFlite are on there way but no more info on that. I presume and hope will be sometime this week.

My 30x30 6 Series rail has arrived, she's sweet. Why I never flex like that before is beyond me.

Have also been building a fin jig from 6x2''. I just need the last few bits, 1'' hooks, elastic and to cut the feet and she's done. Pic's once built.

Been a little busy, fin jig. Found this topic and made my own

https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?9859-Homemade-Fin-Alignment-Guide-Version-2

6X2 24'' and 15'' sections
2X2 X2 for the feet
X3 M10 140mm coach bolts
X3 M10 wing nuts
1'' wide elastic
6X 1'' screw hook
MDF spacer

The MDF spacer is 6mm, same as the fin thickness. I've cut the end closest to the fin at an angle to allow me some extra space. Feet are wood glued on (PVA). I'm happy with it and so are the kids.

Shown with a template fin size and 4'' od poster tube

I'm glad I could be your inspiration. I love the fin guide design.

You are defo that man. Scan a copy of your signature I'll print it and stick it on the the jig!

It's so simple, clean and easy to use even my missies understands it. Now that's a result.

Like I said, I didn't design it. But you're right, it is an elegant design.
