    Rieces Pieces anyone?

Finished up a Big Bertha with the nose cone mod. Not the cover art paint a 'custom' job :D But it sure gives me a hankering for some Rieces Pieces! 20200504_180557 by Tom Whit, on Flickr

What was the deal with Estes Big Daddy nose cones?

I will be receiving a new Big Daddy kit to work on soon to help fight off boredom :D But I remembered there was some sort of issue with the nose cone of this model. I did a brief search and found lots of 'yes I modded my nose cone' but no real examples of what was actually done. Thanks in...

    An intricate masking job!

Been working on an Estes LEO Space train. got it all put together and realized the bottom of the model was supposed to be painted black. I had already painted all the white, and masked and did the 'trim' with flat black. Then realized I forgot the bottom of the wing. So I did this 'intricate'...

    Bonding painted surfaces?

I am working on an Estes Space Train. Some of the parts are better / easier painted before assembly. Its a minor piece the 'booster' section so I not worried with structural. Other than wind ripping it off. Its a body tube that would be painted with enamel. The body tube fits into some...

Ideas for painting 'just the tip' of nosecones?

It would be cool if there was an easy way to paint the tip of a nose cone in a nice even manner. I thought it would be simple. Just cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and slip that over the tip. It 'sorta' worked but there was some blow by and it ended up tilted.

Just got an Estes ESAM-58 and...

Just picked up an Estes ESAM-58 from Hobby Lobby for a good price. Opened it a moment ago and browsed the directions. Typical Estes directions, but wait! Nowhere in the directions does it cover the fins!!! It goes 'prepare nose cone', 'engine mount', 'mark tube', then straight to, 'shock...

Building a Boosted Bertha.. and a question.

Recently got a Boosted Bertha kit and like it very much. I am completely familiar with Big Bertha having built at least 3 of them. But there are some differences. First of all the booster stage. It has through the wall fins and centering rings with baffle holes in them. The rocket is gap...

    Streamer deployment ideas ?

I'm working on an Estes Vapor. I want to put streamer recovery in it. The streamer is 20'-0" long but fits into the BT60 easily. In fact too easily. Even though I wrap like 3 feet of Kevlar string around it as soon as I put it in the body tube it unravels and ends up wrapping on the shock cord...

The rocket that refuses to be painted!!!

I have been working on an Estes Star Orbiter. It has been assembled, primed and sanded for quite a while now. Went to paint it with some "ACE" brand white gloss and managed to get a paint sag. So I let it dry for about 4 days, wet sanded it and then got some Rustolium 2X, gotta be better paint...

    Estes new Vapor... weight?

I am working on the new Estes Vapor I got from Hobby Lobby yesterday. Cant seem to find its specification for weight anywhere? Anyone have this number? Or maybe able to weigh theirs? Thinking on maybe doing a streamer and need the weight of the rocket + spent casing to calaulate it's length...

One of those "Ohhhhh NOOOOOOO!" moments!

So I have been working on a Estes Star Orbiter over the last week. It was coming along really nicely with tapered and papered fins, A good set of the motor mount. Spirals filled on the BT primed, sanded, got the fins on nice and straight. Only thing left is the fillets! 20191111_165139 by Tom...

30 minute epoxy okay for through wall fins to engine tube?

Title pretty much says it all. I am working on an Estes "Star Orbiter". It has through the body tube wall fins that get glued directly to the engine tube. I am just a little worried about the heat. Don't really know how hot the outside of the engine tube gets. Or is JB Weld in order? BTW it...

    Rocket finder .. beepers?

I was wondering if anyone made an in expensive beeper that can be put in low power rockets that makes them easier to find? I don't want to spend big bucks on a GPS module, just something simple and hopefully in expensive.

A post mortom of a wrecked Estes High Flyer XL

I will make it brief. I saw a few threads where the use of Kevlar line for shock cord was discussed. In those discussions it was stated that the cord can be used without any 'stretchy' shock cord as long as it is at least 3 times the body tube length. I had built the now demised HF XL with a...

    Finishing heavy card stock pieces?

Greetings everyone. I was gifted an Estes "Dark Silver" kit. If your not familiar with it it is sort of a 'futuristic' design and has a few heavy card stock detail pieces. I am familiar with finishing balsa filing, sanding, etc. Also with filling tube spirals. However card stock is...

    Amazon rocket engine prices?

I was shopping for some E12-6's the other day and first went to amazon. They wanted nearly 50 bucks for a 3 pack not including 'haz mat' shipping. I then just punched in E12-6 in google and found a hobby chain store got a three pack for a little over 20 bucks including shipping! What is up...

Attended my first HP launch event today!

Greetings all, My wife and I attended our first organized launch today out at the SEARS 572 site. Unfortunately the weather kept things rather mute. With breezy winds and a low ceiling threatening rain, nothing really HP was launched :( But there was a group of engineering students trying out...

    Clear coat.. recommendations?

Hi all. Working on an Estes High flyer with a lot of work towards the 'finish'. I am pretty happy with the finish I got on the tube, fins are okay too. I applied the decals and finished them off with some microsol. But I was thinking a good clear coat would be a good finishing touch. I have...

    Next SEARS Launch?

I have been checking the SEARS webpage every few days to get an idea of when the next launch would be. It still reads "Next Launch September 28" and that is the last launch listed. https://www.sears572.com/ As I understand it they have a few 'issues' with their website and do most of their...
