RocDoc's New Build Thread -- The 24" Diameter Super Big Daddy

I'm not concerned about 'beating them to the punch'. A year sounds appropriate for me. If the materials still in their possession and they feel they'd like to see the unfinished projects completed we'll explore that. As far as we know all this stuff has already been handed to a friend or...

RocDoc's New Build Thread -- The 24" Diameter Super Big Daddy

I've located some family members on Facebook, I'm local to them, and I was thinking the same thing. However, this incident only occured a few months ago. I'm not exactly sure if this is the time to present this?

After some further unpleasant reading appears that he took his own life. You can never tell from the outside looking in. RIP.

RocDoc's New Build Thread -- The 24" Diameter Super Big Daddy

Found this thread, read the whole thing just like everyone else. I live very close to this fella, and woulda' loved to have found a rocketry bud so I did a search and turned this up: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/tribnet/obituary.aspx?pid=180303447 Worst case scenario. Not sure of the...

    Daddy Leviathan

https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?123668-Had-2-Leviathans-Turned-one-into-a-29mm-Big-Daddy-w-stuffer-tube Did this exact thing. Flies great with ~3oz of nose weight.

    Onebadhawk up and running?

Before I place an order, I heard he was down n out for a bit. Everything good now? Realizing that it's going to cost me 50$ in materials to make harnesses, or I can just buy premade ones.

Shear pins on main only, or main and drogue?

Shear pins on main prevent deployment at apogee due to shock from the drogue charge firing, yes? Shear pins on fincan (drogue) prevent drag separation, yes? So do most dual deploy setups use them on both?

First attempt with cable cutter . . . FAIL!

Does this mean it's for sale? :-)

    Redundant electonics for dual deploy.

Looking for a good deal, have a big AV bay so not picky on what I get. Open to anything. Would like to buy a pair if possible. Will be making the purchase around Tuesday.

Standard operating procedure for attaching a shock cord to a HPR fiberglass nc?

This particular rocket will have no additional weight in the NC. Possibly a tracker a some point, but I've got plenty of stability. My intent was to use BSI 30 minute epoxy. You think I need to upgrade epoxies for this product? The rest of the rocket is cardboard and ply, I've used titebond...

Standard operating procedure for attaching a shock cord to a HPR fiberglass nc?

RHarsh, I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I used this exact method in a Level 1 rocket and the epoxy failed on me. Due to the amount of noseweight I had the NC came in pretty much ballistic. Right in the middle of camp. So understandably, that was enough of a bad experience to turn me off of...

Standard operating procedure for attaching a shock cord to a HPR fiberglass nc?

https://rocketrywarehouse.com/product_info.php?products_id=135 How does the average joe attach their shockcord to a fiberglass nose cone? Epoxy in a bulkhead with ubolt? I know that's only marginally enough in MPR rockets with the phenolic NC's. Is the epoxy to fiberglass bond going to be...

Level 2 scratch carpet tube build. 4" dia, 54mm, dual deploy.

Also decided on the route I'll take with the nose cone. I really wanted to make my own, both for the sake of scratch building and possibly saving money, but I don't have faith in my abilities with the tools I have available to make something that will stand up to the motors I'm planning to run...

5' MIRPS Pilot chute for 11lb rocket as main chute. Anything I'm missing? Linked.

Hi John, Thanks for the input- it is appreciated. I can see how 'diameter' isn't the best, or even a good method for determining appropriate parachute sizing. The reason I am sticking to it is because it's apparently the standard. This conversation did show me I need to put some significant...

Nose weight. 4oz of metal vs 4oz of clay, is one safer than the other?

Valid point. You're probably right. This was on a Leviathan that was shortened to a Big Daddy. This particular flight was on a G, but I was getting ready for an H. I didn't think the nose cone would take *that* much load. Obviously I was wrong.

Nose weight. 4oz of metal vs 4oz of clay, is one safer than the other?

This was just an Estes plastic nose cone, and it hit hard. Buried the tip in the ground. Clay wasn't deformed a bit.

Level 2 scratch carpet tube build. 4" dia, 54mm, dual deploy.

Glued on my aft centering ring. Then realized I should have installed t-nuts to do the type of motor retention I was planning on using. Whoops. Have room for another centering ring, will probably just install another with t-nuts installed.

Nose weight. 4oz of metal vs 4oz of clay, is one safer than the other?

Recently had a 'close call' @ FITS when my nose cone separated at apogee. It came in hot into the camp, and lawn darted. buried itself a couple inches into the ground. No person or property was hurt, thank God. I had ~4oz of clay as the nose weight. The nose tip containing the weight held...

Level 2 scratch carpet tube build. 4" dia, 54mm, dual deploy.

Hi Jeff, Fillets pictured are internal (inside the bt), fin to body tube. I used wood glue for the fillets for the fins to mmt. These fillets are not pictured.

Level 2 scratch carpet tube build. 4" dia, 54mm, dual deploy.

Also went through the weights more carefully, it's starting to look like it's going to be 16lbs.
