Gluing Non Structural Items To Painted Surfaces

Hi Bob: Gluing to a painted surface may not be your best bet, be it structural or decorative pieces. Basically, when gluing to a painted surface, all that's really holding your piece, is the paint not the glue. Some CA's (like Super Glue) will actually break down the paint causing it to...

    Perfect Finishes? How?

No real nice way of saying it. The Secret is:......Sanding+Time+patience= Great Results These are unfortunately the 3 things most folks don't want to give the rocket, sometimes including myself. FWIW, I use the 3M sanding pads. They come in a variety of grits from course to fine...

    Cosmic Dragon L3 Build

I don't know, personally I think the screws sound like a good idea.....The way I see it, a little bit of overkill never hurt, especially on a L3 bird! It's what I refer to as "Peace of mind"! ;) Carry on, Sir. Kinda waitin' to see those fins, actually...:D

I definitley agree with using 1/4" threaded rod to help reinforce the MMT, however I noticed that only 3 C.R.'s will be used. Just curious if you think that's enough and do your TAP's agree? _______________________ -Chris

    Layering - try 2

The amount of layers that I apply usually depends on, not only the rocket, but the type of epoxy used. LPR= 1 layer (2 part clear) MPR= 2 layers (2 part clear) HPR= 3 or more layers, depending on what kind of epoxy is used. JB Weld, PC-7, and any of the thicker epoxies is what I normally use...

    Finishing

I definitely agree with everything Micro said. Another tip is to "not" paint the Airframe standing up. I have found that keeping it horizontal during painting will give you a much more even, level finish. Kinda working against gravity, so to speak. I just insert a dowel rod, broomstick, even...

    Level 2

LOL..Ya know.....I was gunna say that in the beginning, but you had them all glued up already, and it wouldn't have helped very much to make mention at the time. :D Actually, you're still ok though. As long as you epoxy in your fillets like you mentioned, and glass (I'd still do 2...

I love a day at the field!

Nice video...... The flight was cool.....but what was even better was how the youngin's got a kick out of it. :proud: Days like these are really what Model Rocketry is all about. ;) :D _______________________ -Chris

    Tonight's efforts

That's when you hand someone else the camera and say,"Excuse me, but could you please take a picture of my rocket at the critical point of ignition please?" :D;) Good luck tommorow..... ____________________ -Chris

    Level 2

Looks good......Just curious though why you didn't carry the FG out to the edges of the fin? Also, it still isn't too late to put fillets on the FG side of the fins anyways. It will still add more strength as well as aerodynamic consistency. J/M 2 cents. Nice start...... Keep the pics...

    My Super Big Bertha Design

The length of your fin tabs definitely translates into the use of more wood glue. Which then raises some concern as to whether or not the glue actually set up before it wetted out the fin tabs and BT, of which my guess is, may have been what happened here. I wouldn't worry too much about it...

Repair of through the wall fin

I have to agree with everything Andrew said. There is no real miracle fix except to rout out the remaining portion of fin. I have a HP bird that also broke a fin and of course being a HP rocket, you're left with no choice but to make it "good as new". After I routed out the wood all the way to...

    Epoxy Overkill

Well, first off I would say TTW fins is always a good idea using motors D and higher. I think whether to use epoxy or simple wood glue is a matter of preference on a MP rocket. Some swear on epoxy, some have turned the use of wood glue into an art and use it on rockets all the way up to a G...

    My Super Big Bertha Design

Wow...my bad! In just looking at the pic, they appear to be ply....and then I read the list. :dork::congrats: Anyways, (as I pick my head up off the desk) your lamination is definitely a good idea. I'd say give em' an extra coat of epoxy just for those "G" , and dare I say, "H" motors. Can't...
