So long Dickey, thanks for all the music...

Dickey Betts passed away today. If the name doesn't ring a bell his music sure will. He was best known as guitarist and front man with the Allman Brothers band... He was one of my all-time favorite pickers and I must admit that the news of his passing made my eyes leak a little bit... :(

Well, I got a new job...

Leading trail rides for a horse ranch up near Waco. Kinda like not really workin'... I'll stick with the cars and racing, but dial it back to a side gig. Still horsepower, just one at a time! Here are a few pics of the view from my new office...

I might have to give this one a try...

This was posted over on the Secret Projects Forum (Great place to check out, by the way) and it is just begging to become a rocket. Two motor cluster, sci-fi style fins with tip pods, canopy.... Just cool lookin'! I have plenty of parts in the stash and its been a while since I've done a new...

    I had this idea...

Wadda you guys think??? Good idea? Bad idea? :questions: And to those of you with the switchblade equipped safety code books, rest assured this is only a joke. I would NEVER use anything as small as a J270 in a boat this size! 😉 Besides, I promise not to run it at any NAR-sanctioned...

New toy (Not rocket related, though...)

I know we have a bunch of bass players on this forum, so I thought I would post this up... The wife and I made a run up to the big city today to visit a couple of shops we don't have in town. Neither store opened 'till 1200, but the Guitar Center next door was open, so I texted my wife to tell...

    Necroed HV Arcas project...

Twenty-plus years ago, when I was just getting into mid-power, I picked up an Aerotech HV Arcas kit on the way home from a launch. It was my third mid-power rocket, and it very quickly became one of my Fly-it-every-time-go-to rockets. I still have it, as well as the other two mid-power birds...

What is it you like so much about...

There are a few rockets that are MASSIVLY popular but don't particularly appeal to me at all. That said, I'm very genuinely interested in what it is about these designs that is so appealing that some folks have several in their fleet, often in different sizes! These are the designs I was...

Rest in peace, Tom T. Hall...

We lost one of my childhood favorites this weekend. Tom T. Hall was one of the classic old country storytellers. He could sure spin a yarn, often with good bit of humor. Thanks Tom, I'll sure miss ya, pardner...

    Snark II...

I was looking to build a little scale-like 13mm rocket a little while back, so I stared routing around the parts box and found a set of balsa fins from an old Estes kit that I bought for parts (I think it was a Sequoia) and was holding one of them up to a tube, looking for ideas. I slid the fin...

    Retro-future memories and inspiration...

When I was a kid, Thunderbirds. Some of you, being from a similar era to my own, will recognize that not only as a complete sentence, but a complete thought and, indeed, a complete paragraph. Gerry Anderson's puppet/sci-fi epic changed the way we saw the world. When my brother and I (5 and 7...

    Inspired Bullpup...

A while back @Messedupryan did an Estes Bullpup build thread that inspired me to not only repair my 25 year old Bullpup that had lost a fin, but to break out the NIB Bullpup kit that had been languishing in my build pile for nearly as long. In that thread, @GlenP suggested that the paint scheme...

    Gemini lab thing...

I worked up something like this in OR a little while ago. Got the build bug this past weekend so I actually started work on it, along with a couple of others. This idea was inspired by several things, one being the Gemini MOL project from the sixties. Another inspiration was the old Estes plan...

    Hypersonic glider...

I got the build jones a couple of weeks ago so I built this little glider. The design has been rattling around in my skull for a few years, I just never got around to it until now. It is based on hypersonic, scramjet powered airplane proposals that have been floating around for decades. Some...

    Anyone have plans/patterns for...

Centuri's Satellite 62SL? Kind of a stupid question, I guess. There isn't much to it and it would be ridiculously easy to fake, but I'd kinda like to do an actual clone and it doesn't seem to be available on JimZ... Thanks! Mike

This might be my next build...

Inspired by a balsa BT-60 balsa Gemini capsule I found in my stash-o-stuff, the Estes DOM Orbital Transport Lab and the 4" x .75" switch band tube that I got with a LOC av bay set, I started messin' around in OR and came up with this. Not terribly original or anything, but I think it's kinda...

    Just an observation...

...on a kind of lazy, rainy day (Here, anyway). Now, before we even get started let me say I'm certainly not pickin' on anybody! I'm MUCH worse about this kind of thing than most... How often have you opened up someone's latest kit build thread and read something like: "It was built pretty...

Glue that works on LOC nosecones?

I think LOC 'cones (others too) are made of polypropylene that seems to be impervious to any and all adhesives currently available to the whole of humanity. Have any of you had any luck getting something too stick to a LOC nosecone? I'm not looking to glue fins to it or anything structural...

Estes K-11 WAC Corporal clone finally finished...

The old Estes WAC was one of my absolute favorites back in the day. It was the second rocket I ever built (Got the WAC and an Alpha III at the same time) and I ALWAYS had one in the fleet. It flew every time I went to the field. If one was lost or wrecked (Often lost, rarely wrecked) it was...

    1/3 scale (4") WAC Corporal...

Posted this elsewhere, but thought it might be welcome here as well... I was on a ski vacation in Southern Utah last week when the ski area closed, so I had time to mess around in Open Rocket. I've been wanting to do an HP WAC Corporal for a while now, so I used Peter Alway's drawing and some...
