Hi,

Me and a few friends are planinng a road trip to the States in July. Our route is approximately San Francisco - Las Vegas - Denver.

Are there any (preferably high-power) launches in the area during that time? We'd be interested in attending one if it matches our itienary reasonably. Thanks!

Cheers,
Sampo N.

Not exactly on your route, but your route IS a long one so.....

You really should consider Hellfire at Bonneville Salt Flats in late July. It's an excellent event - lots of great rockets, but not so many that you have to wait in long lines to fly. Great folk, and one of the most surreal landscapes you'll ever visit. Fine equipment, good vendors, history/tradition, etc. Oh, it sometimes does get a wee bit warm out there that time of year.

A highly recommended launch to attend, in my opinion.

The National Association of Rocketry Annual Meet (NARAM-56) will be held south of Denver in Pueblo, CO will be held July 26 - August 1, 2014. Sports launching is held with the contest on a separate range. You would get to meet a lot of rocketeers. Vern and Gleda Estes are usually in attendance if they are able to attend.

Wow, I wasn't aware that NARAM is in Colorado. We're planning on leaving from Colorado on the 28th, so I could just make it for a day or two. Not 100% sure yet though.

Thanks for the tips!

Hi,

We're leaving for our road trip next week and we'll be flying back on the 28th. We could attend NARAM on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

I guess Saturday would likely be the most interesting with the ULA launches. Or does someone have some other specific recommendations?

The NARAM site says "ULA Launches Intermittent 9am-1pm". Are there any more detailed plans or estimates when the triple-N rocket is flying? We're staying at a friend's house in Fort Collins, so it's a three hour drive to Pueblo. How early should we be at the site to see the launch?

Thanks!

It is just like NASA, real high end rocket science. There can be delays or it can go right on schedule. If there are delays you have to be a steely eyed missile man and wait, not a place for the timid. Lots of people - you need to register beforehand, it is free, but they want to keep the crowds down to something like 1,200. You can make the pilgrimage walk down to take a look at the beast before launch. Hot, dusty, real Old West kind of stuff, so bring you canteen and Ten Gallon Hat. Pale folk from up North need lots of sunscreen at a mile high. After the big one goes there is a mass exodus, hundreds of cars and clouds of dust, leaving behind only the hardened model rocketeers to launch the really scary stuff. Being there early is always the best, hang around if you like, it is all up to you as to what you want to see. The fun is always weather dependent so rocketry is not for those sticking to a tight schedule who want to see all types of rocket launched. That is why it is a week long event.

Unfortunately, LUNAR is limited to flying at our Low Power field during the summer dry months.

Our low power field is at Moffett Field/NASA Ames. The July launch is on Saturday, the 19th.

Saturday or Sunday at NARAM-56 would be good to watch any flying.

Saturday night will be the Manuacturers' Forum at the NARAM-56 hotel (Courtyard Pueblo Downtown).

It's free and you get to find out about all the neat stuff various companies are producing/developing.

Certainly delays are to be expected - been there, done that. I was just hoping that someone in the know might give some estimate on the schedule, when the triple-N launch could be attempted at the earliest. Is the team planning to be ready to launch immediately at 9 o'clock or a couple of hours later after a few other launches?

The friends I'm traveling with aren't as enthusiastic about rocketry, so it may be tough to convince them to wake up at 5 AM for the drive. :)

Cheers,
Sampo N.
