Estes Hex-3: kinda cute, it flies, not your ordinary build...

After looking at this kit several times, I finally picked one up at the local hobby store. It made its first flight this past weekend.

I built it pretty much stock with only a couple of issues:
1. I had to enlarge all the openings for the launch rod. As cut, the openings were too tight.
2. The directions call for inserting the engine mount from the top, but this is pretty difficult (putting a round ring in a six-sided hole). As others have mentioned on the forum, I first glued the aft plate to the motor tube and then inserted this assembly from the rear.
3. This kit is all about cutting, folding, and gluing. It's important to make sure all of the folds are accurate. I had one fold that was just a tiny bit off and, as a result, one of the legs had a very slight warp. If you're a beginner, build a couple of other rockets before tackling this one.
4. I painted the top centering ring with Testors gloss Grape. It was a close match, but could have used a few drops of white mixed in.

My Hex-3 made its first flight on a C6-0. It flew in a straight path but seemed to oscillate side-to-side a bit. Anybody else experience this? This could be related to the one leg that was a little distorted. The altitude was estimated to be about 90 - 100 feet. I was surprised how slow this model came down after the engine burned out. I recovered mine on the grassy field without any damage. Fun.

I flew mine this past Saturday on a B 6-0 and had the same oscillation you described, but I also have a slightly misfolded fin as well. It was a very enjoyable and fun build, it's always nice to be able to use building techniques a little different than normal.
