Do NASA paint jobs mean anything?

For simplification terms do the elaborate and random checkered pattern on NASA's Gemini ,Apollo, Mercury mission mean anything or were they for looks? Also remember paint adds protection but does adding other colors to the body really necessary?

Plz Answers are needed !
