Recently built a crayon rocket from a crayon bank with a 29 mm motor mount I've built it for my level 1 but I need to fix the shock cord attachment the ny-lock eye bolt I attetched to the baffle plate has unscrewed itself any suggestions on how to screw a nut on 12 inches down in a 29 mm tube????

Hey There!
I took a little more of an "over-kill" approach with the motor mount assembly to beef it up enough to easily handel "I" motors.
I used a piece of threaded rod that goes all the way through from the aft CR to the forward CR. The piece sticking out the back is a solid attachment point for a motor retainer strap. And the piece poking out the top is coupled ( with a couple of locking nuts)to an eye for the shock cord.
I thought there was a link here on the forum somewhere. But if you like, you can go to "stlouisrocketry.org" , go to the "Gallery" , and look for "Don's Crayon Project" under "Features and Projects"
Over time and the stress of many launches, ( and rebuilds after various crashes) I have found that the soft plastic "tail-cone" section eventually fails... It may need a little more epoxy during construction...

It's sort of a standard fitting, like an electric screw driver. Any hex bolt fittings you can fit into a dril, will fit into the end of the flex driver. So if you need an external driver, Female to male headed hex, that's very common. If you need a male to female headed hex, again very common. Most drill/scredriver bit sets come with them.
I would suggest hoofing on over to your local Home Despot (if you have one) bring the bolt or the nut and you can pick up a long bit holder/flexi holder and the needed fixture for under $10.

Or, you could just get a long socket extension (or couple two shorter ones) and the appropriate socket. Hold the rocket above you, or have someone do it for you, so you are putting the nut UP into the tube instead of down.

FWIW, I would replace the nylock nut with a standard one, then cover it with epoxy. I'd be afraid the nylon in the nylock nut would degrade rather quickly being inside the motor tube. I have seen the nylon in these things melt before when they get too hot.

hey Alex you have to post some pictures of your fins and slots, and the whole thing glued together. also, what did you decide about parachutes for it? you can easily make a 36" octagonal ripstop nylon chute.

I'm probably going to use a 36" top flight chute for it I also need a 29 casing for it and a reload I Have pictures of gumby on the nose cone I'm actually considerin launching him on it or i might use my AT Barracuda with the seat I made for him to sit on in stead of being taped to the nose cone That would be Uncomfortable for him He's also trying to decide which launch vehicle to use he might to both but he's saying If the videorocketry's clay brother's gumby can do it on a crayon so can he. I'll try and post the pictures especially with gumby onboard. I've nearly finished the R2-D2 I got last year and i got the porta potty rocket There is a thread in the low-power section. :D :D :D

Try your local fabric store or arts & crafts store.
We can find it occasionally on Wal-Mart as well...

Edit: Some places call it sport nylon...

Why not design and build your Crayon modular so you can
take it apart with a wrench and a screwdriver for maintenance
like these bad puppies:

Enjoy !
:D

I don't know but it'll be about 2 or 3 years before I actually go for my level 1 but i will think about it ;)

lol i am a mad english mad man. I'm already thinking of my level 2 i'm thinking a 6" diameter mercury redstone with a 54 MM motor mount.hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm;) but i still need to fly the crayon rocket which is going to be SWEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm thinking a AT RMS F40 for its first flight. I want it to be a kind of rocket that will fly many times at the launches maybe even at every launch I go to :D :D ;)

roadkill, great website I have visited it before, how long did it take you to build the single crayon I might do modular design on the second crayon.:D  ;)

'how long did it take you to build the single crayon'

Methinks the actual building time was a few hours
spread over a week or so, with the rest of the week
spent trying to figure it out...

...and I still bungled up the X1 a little bit: the fincan
screws did not line up right due to a brainfart and
I couldn't use those attachment points for rail guides
so I had to drill two more holes (aka swisscheeseitis)
thru the airframe into the CRs and use wood screws...

Corrected that problem on X2 using my very
successful 'duhh moment - slap forehead - bang
head on brick wall until problem solved or
knocked out cold' troubleshooting method....
:p

Quick edit: I'm tinkering on yet another Crayon with
triple 24mm 'E' mounts to fly on Estes motors,
pics'n'stuff up prolly next week...

CQBArms is right on the money, flex driver and yes you can get a variety of attachments for them Lowes has a better selection I believe...

thanks for the info I was going to go to sears because they had it there but I'll go to lowes so that i can get the right attatchment for it.

cliff do you thinj the crayon will be ok on a 39" parachute cause that is the only thing i have that is close to 36"

I used a 30" top flight recovery parachute in my crayon rocket and it worked fine. A 39" would work but it would come down very slowly.

crayon very lonely it is sitting in my room without its nose cone next to its brother(crayon being used as a coin bank:D) poor thing it is very bored and it doesn't like me because I haven't gone to lowe's to get the flex driver and gotten it a parachute or a casing for it (but it will be happy by Dec. 2 because i will get a 29\40-120 casing)

ive built several crayon rockets. they are heavy ( if you build the decent) I'd recomend a g64 for a nice slow flight (the f40 may be too small) then blast it with an h180, then go for the gusto H268Redline....

I've flown my crayon on two H180's and it ROCKED!! next tome I'm going to try two 6 grain 29mm whitelightning's...

oh heres a pic.. no special tube no fiberglassm just a well built fin can/ motormount,

Hey Metalwizard,

You call that a 'Crayce' or a 'Deucon'...
:D

I call it Awesome !
Try it on twin H238T's, my double stack X2
just about vanished in a blink...:p

the rocket only weighs about a pound and a half and I am NOT getting a G64 for the first flight mine is a single motor version besides the smallest motor Cliff recomends is a F40 much more easy to get than a G64 and i am NOT level 1 certifiedit will be a LOOONG time before I do get my Level 1

road kill, maybe a "cryin wild"

haddent come up with a good one yet.

UK you dont need anything special for a G74 it still considered a model rocket motor (no cert required)

if it only weghs 1.5 lbs an f40 might do it, but its gonna bw on the low and slow side. (every crayon I've built ends up closer to 2 lb loaded or more)

good luck,
