Thanks to Charlie at Carolina Composite Rocketry, my 8" Diameter Der Red Max finally has a new Nose Cone. The original cone was 4 to 1 and had a sharper point... Thanks Charlie!!! It looks like a Der Red Max now.

In the picture is its little 4" Brother. Sooner or later that one will get painted.

The 8" inch has flown once on a L Motor. This weekend it will fly again at the Freedom Launch on an M motor. I sure hope this one stays out of the trees. This one is dual deployment and will have a tracker in it. (We're still trying to find the Carbon Fiber 6" DRM).

BTW, the fins are removable for transport and storage because as you can see - it has a pretty large fin span...

Let's see, a 4", a 6", now an 8" der red max... What's next, Todd?

Hi, can you explain more on the removable fins ?

Sure... I have some pics but they are on an old computer...

Basically there are 3 Aluminum U Channels attached to the Motor Mount tube. Each fin has an aluminum L channel attached right where the fin meets the inside of the Body Tube.

The Aft Centering Ring is removable - held on by threaded rod, wing nuts and small machine screws at the very bottom of the body tube. Both the Forward CR and Aft CR have the same U Channel attached to them.

So basically you slide the fins down the channel then close it all up with the Aft CR and everything is locked in place. There was no issue with the L Motor and it should be fine with the M1315 as well.

I hope that helps...

thanks a lot, this is what I was looking for

Depends how big a tube and cone you guys can make there at Carolina Composite Rocketry. :D

Actually its time to put together one of the original size Estes Kits and maybe make a "Big Der Red Max". That was a longer version offered as a part of a kit that included a launch pad...

I would think so. A four-inch one (Estes Mega Der Red Max) is awkward enough in my little car.... :)

BEC, I couldnt agree more, the MDRM is the one rocket that is always a pain to transport, and I have an SUV!

Thank goodness this one actually does fit in the back of my car assembled... But there won't be much else in there with it.

Hey Todd, are you only going to be in O'burg Sat &/or Sunday, or will you be out there on Monday?

I can only make it down to O'burg on Monday. So I hope the weather holds and I can fly this Monday at about Noon.

Great looking rocket! What's the weight?

Thanks,
Ben

I saw Tom's video of the flight. Very nice. I am sorry that I missed seeing it in person. Congrats.

Can you comment on what the new nose cone cost?? My 7.5 Der Red Max nose cone was damaged and I would like to get a new one...

Eric, I hope all is well! I checked with Carolina Composite Rocketry and Charlie said the the 7.5" Cone - would cost $155.00. Pretty darn good price for a cone of that size.

I hope that helps.

Todd

Here are a couple photos from the weekend... The flight was on an M1315. Everything went as planned.

The can you see attached to the aft CR is a coffee can. It acts as a "crush can". It takes the initial impact with the ground to take the stress of the weight off the fins on landing.

Stay away from flat blast deflectors..or the Krusnik effect or Bernouli lock will happen.

I really doubt that would happen on a rocket this size; the sheer overpressure from the motor will easily blow it off the pad.

It's a different story when you have the same sized cavity with a C motor in it, though.

Sure does, thanks Todd (Long time, how have you been??)

That price is awesome and reasonable for a fiberglass large cone. Do you have any contact info for Charlie at Carolina?

Did you see any photos of my Der Red Max put-together and L3 Flight?? If not, check it out. Pretty long Blog but I pictured the hell out of it. Start at the top of the Blog Archive

Thanks again

Looks like the motor has to be hanging out the back a good bit so that the can doesn't interfere with the plume. Might work on a Big Red Max due to the extended length but could cause a problem with CG on a normal scale DRM.

Its really not an issue on a Estes Kit... Small rocket on an over-sized chute. (Although I have seen many break the balsa fins on a hard landing... The purpose of this set up on this 45 lbs rocket is to keep from breaking a fin or the structure that allows me to make these fins removable.

Actually, if you could find the same size & weight can to match the scale of this version - you would be fine. The can would weigh almost nothing... I guess you could use a very small plastic cup - maybe one like those you get with cough syrup...

As I mentioned, I wouldn't bother... Those giant chutes in Estes kits should allow for a very soft landing.

Eric, I love the work and the blog you put together! Someday we need to get together and fly our DRM's. Give Charlie a shout - he'll fix you up!
