Specifically, I'm in Lufkin Texas, Angelina County.

I just found out that model rockets are not allowed to be launched on city property. Its part of an ordinance that was passed in 1971.:facepalm::mad::facepalm::mad::facepalm:

Is there a complied list of such places here that I can add this to for someone else's FYI?

Is there an area close by that is outside the city limits? I had the same problem as a child and found a farm just outside of town who would allow me to launch as long as I cleaned up after my self.
I live in Hardin county, nobody has said anything to me yet...

Is there a charter school somewhere in town? If so, volunteer to conduct regular launches for its students (and yourself).

Otherwise, promote the STEM agenda with the city and convince them of the educational value of model rocketry to get them to allow club (or just adult) sponsored launches on public school property.

Time to fight city hall!

Seriously, this ordinance was passed in 1971 and now more than 40 years have passed. The Councillors whom enacted it have been and gone and I dare say that if you were to present a well researched case (showing that model rocketry is safe and has been for the last 40 years), you would get this changed or removed all together.

Laws sit on the books long past their use-by date simply because it's easier to leave them there than to remove them - and until someone challenges them, they will remain.

Good luck!

Wichita Falls Texas same story!
No pyrotechnic devices in or NEAR city limits.

Many laws like this are a result of mishandling fireworks and are not aimed specifically at rocketry. I would try to find out who can has the authority there to change the laws or have it modified to at least exempt model rocketry from it. It may not be as hard as you think. Join NAR for the insurance and support, hype the school angle and get some teachers to join your cause.

Model Rockets are not allowed in the Louisville Ky Metro Parks or the Park system in New Albany IN. Which is sad, as they both include some really nice small rocket fields.
