Awhile back I built a MADCOW Bat Ray (smaller version) and I was happy with it for the most part. I hung it from the rafters and every time I looked at it the nose cone just didn't have the shine I wanted it to have. Unlike the MADCOW Scooter kit I built. I think maybe it has a lot to do with how you treat the balsa. The Scooter I used the CA method, sanded it and finished it for a hard shell finish, whereas the Bat Ray I just used the old school Aero-Gloss method.

Well I decided to wet sanded the nose cone and giving it a couple days to dry I came back and repainted it. About four coats of gloss black and about 5 coats of clear allowing time between each coat. The results are below.

At firs the paint started to fog, but after it dried it seemed to go away and then I applied several lite coats of clear. I'm happy now and can live with the finish.

Waaaay more effort than I'd put into it and that's a complement. I paint mine for a "looks good at ten feet" finish. I always keep in the back of my mind what the ultimate doom of a rocket is..... :y:
