Not sure what a SATA is.. but its a 500 Gig for my HP pavillion.. if that helps out

Serial ATA. It's the norm for Hard drives nowadays. There used to be PATA, SCSI, etc....

Okay, I got nothing that size in my collection, but Memory Express has a 500 gig for $60 CDN. Probably a bit cheaper for you. Seagate is a really good make.

But for only a hair more you could upgrade to a 1 TB drive. Might as well.

Good luck with the computer! We know a guy that's friends with st. George transmission (?) and went there. Most likely just a sensor so we left for Cali and got here fine! Hope we make it back fine! Thanks though.

Who is he? I have a dead drive with my Mars stuff and original rocket designs.

You can always try Hirens Boot CD. It is free and has some data recovery software.

+1 on that, I always use to clone drive first then run recovery on the copy if I can get the naughty drive to spin up .

WEll my laptop is back up and running. My guy is now just installing stuff to make things faster and safer for me. he is also building me a new desktop system with dual hard drives so I always have a backup. it will auto update and backup for me. plus I will be able to connect my laptop to it and it will automatically update anything NEW from the laptop.

This should be done today tomorrow at the latest. then he plans on personally brining it from California and setting it all up for me.

So bottom line I am in good shape. but its still gonna take a few days to be at 100% (or more)

thanks to everyone that has been patient with me! this is a great community!

 Awesome news! Sounds like you have a good plan for data backup..I would go one step further..Make regular backups on a different media, like CD/DVD's.Just a suggestion...

Do NOT run recovery software, fixes, etc- it may make matter MUCH WORSE. PM me- will give you a hand. I do data recovery. First step is determininge nature of problem. I have equipment that checks heads and status FIRST before imaging. The hardware is designed to duplicate drives that are damaged. We ONLY work on copies as drives that are failing have a limited amount of time left. Once its been diagnosed to death we almost always need heads... now we are into money in the clean room! Glad to talk to you at 6196832637- either I can help or I will refer you to a top notch lab.
