I had the original plan on doing my Level 3 with a RW Formula 150. But after talking to my club's L3CC he suggested on building more L2 rockets and flying some L motors first. He was absolutely right and that is what I am doing. This will be my prelude to Level 3, the reason for calling it L2.5. If everything goes as planned it will fly next month on a L850W. The kit will be arriving tomorrow, and I will pick up the reload and parachute from my local dealer. This will be a pretty straight forward build using the Proline 4500 epoxy. An Sl100 and DDC22 will be the electronics that will be used. Goal for this build is to get more experience with DD and fly a full L motor. Any advice/tips/CC will be welcome and helpful,Thanks!

Package has arrived!

*Drool* I'm very partial to Dr. Rocket's hardware - correction, I'm head over heels in love with the stuff!!! I have a pretty good amount, but no 75mm (yet). That stuff is just eye candy...... I can't think of a classier way to cert than with those gorgeous red motors doing the huffing and puffing.

Another option you could have taken was to get a 75/5120 case and then flown the L900DM. Then, for your L3 attempt, you could use the same case and get an M1500G or M1297W reload and your set. I'll probably fly the L900DM more than "M" motors when and if I get an L3.

Good luck with the build!

Not to derail your build thread, but are the Dr. Rocket casings made for AeroTech reloads?

After looking at their site, I'm confused. Where can you buy those things. Every dealer they list doesn't have them.

The Dr. Rockets company went out of business some time ago and the remaining motors are becoming harder and harder to get. They use standard Aerotech reloads, and the parts are all interchangeable with Aerotech and Rouse Tech hardware. In fact, you will often see people using the red cases mixed and matched with silver or gold closures from other manufacturers.

I think Performance Hobbies is the only vendor still selling them.

I picked up some nice 38mm cases a few months ago in the "Yard Sale" section of this forum.

Dr. Rocket was the an earlier supplier of AeroTech hardware before they contracted Rouse-Tech to build them. I have both brands and they are interchangeable. with each other. They are only available second hand unless a dealer has some left over. Most likely they don't because I have been flying AT reloads for 4 years now and Rouse-Tech was building them that far back. Someone else may be able to give you a more detailed history.

This will not be my cert rocket,it will prepare me for L3 down the road. I am also planning on flying the L900,L2200G,and L1420R on the 75/5120 case down the road. I know you guys love Dr.Rocket hardware, but please lets keep this on topic. Like everyone else said Dr.Rocket is no longer made and the new manufacture allowed to make the hardware is Rouse-tech.

Have you received the kit yet? I am on the line as to wether I should order one or not...Ill be following this build.

Yes I received yesterday but I was busy picking up motors, so I did not post pictures. It's a great kit and if you have the cash you should definitely buy it.

So I gave a bath then a quick test fit!

This is what I decided to do with my Frenzy XL. Give it a shakedown on a L in the 75/5120 hardware, then go for my L3 on the M1297.

Motor mount has been assembled and glued on. I will begin now to tack the fins on and work on the E-bay. I also received my order from Doghouse which came super fast. I am still debating if I should use the switch band or not:confused:

P.S. Please excuse my messy epoxy job, this is my first time working with the Proline.

Got some more work done. All the fins are attached, rail buttons are on, and installed pem nuts/screws on payload. I should be able to start the filets and motor retention on Monday.

Hi tech fin jig

Rail buttons installed using pem nuts

Again pem nuts used to hold the av-bay to the payload

All done for today!

Well the fincan is done with the exception of fin filets. Rear centering is on along with the motor retention. I also epoxied on the Doghouse charge cups, should work on the av-bay this week.

My L3 cert was at Thunderstruck 4 in Indiana this past weekend. Totally awesome site and folks. There may be a video on the flight as it was a certification flight they were filming.

If you can fly this on an L900 it will take an M1297. There is no real reason for this not to be your L3 as it is capable, and if you build it well enough to fly on a large L it will do fine on a small M.

Nice trick using the estes fin alignment guide to get the fins on straight. I will consider using this technique in the future :).

I flew it this weekend and everything went perfect. I was up Friday night until Saturday at 4am finishing it.I flew it on a L850W to an altitude of 4969 feet. All charges fired from both altimeters and it was recovered by a 66" hemisphere at apogee and a 62" Starchute at 700ft. I am planning on flying it on a L900 Dark Matter on October during GHS.

My mom being silly lol!

Beautiful pictures thanks to JPChan Photography.
