C to G Toober Upscale WIP

My all time favorite rocket is a tube rocket conversion of the Estes Vagabond. It has canted tube fins and a 29mm motor mount. It has flown with a C11-3 to a G64. I believe it's H capable but haven't tried it yet. At least I'm not sure if I did. A CTI 3 grain H54 White Longburn would give it quite a ride. All this to say that since I like the basic shape so much I would like to use an upscale for an L3 attempt in a few years.

In preparation my plan is to build a couple of smaller upscale and work up to the big boy. The first will be based on 4" tubing. Why? Because I have all I need in the garage. It should be a relatively simple build (famous last words) which I hope to launch at the Tri Cities Rocketeers Sod Blaster 2 this labor day weekend.

Decision time! 38mm or 54mm motor mount?
Here is the dirty original with the nose cone skewed a bit:
C-G Toober with AT RMS 29/40x120 casing.

How does it all fit in there? By storing the chute in the nose cone.

This rocket has flown around 35 times. It really scoots on an AT F42-T8

Very nice! Be aware that if it's light enough you can get well into the transonic ( and possibly just beyond ) with, for instance: g76, g76, g80

EDIT: disregard, I had thought we were MD but I think that's a retainer tail not the case itself.

I saw the rocket earlier today, it is an Estes PS series 29mm retainer on it. Looks like a fun upscale, go for it Derek!

Bingo! I checked my notes and it did fly on a G76 which delaminated one of the fins. The tube fins have 1/64 ply lining on the inside to provide extra strength. A bit of tape to seal the leading edge will solve the problem me thinks.

Rich, I found another section fo 4" tubing so I have all I need to proceed.
