Where do I buy Fill-n-finish?

I have seen many references to Elmers Fill-N-Finish but have never used it. Where would I find it? I suppose our friends at Sam Walton's store will have it but would it be with the glue, the paint, or next to the Bondo?

Got mine from Lowe's, prolly
Homer Teapot also has it...

I'll echo Peartree's question. I've been looking for Elmer's Fill-N-Finish, but no luck yet. My LHS didn't know what I was talking about, and I haven't found it at hardware stores either. I e-mailed Elmer's and they replied that I could find Elmer's Wood Filler at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. True, but not the same product I was asking about... It seems even Elmer's doesn't know where to find Fill-N-Finish.

Menards has it, if you have those down there.

I get mine from Lowes. It's the ONLY place I've been able to find it.

Which Lowe's did you go to? (I'm in Maryland, too.)

Was it near the Elmer's 'Carpenters Wood Filler' (this isn't what you're talking about, right?) or was it in a different part of the store?

I live in the Eastern part of Maryland, about 15 minutes west of the Delaware line. The closest Lowes to me are all in Delaware. I've gotten it in, Dover, Middletown(closest to me) and Bear(Newark).

Here's what it looks like:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/thethompsonfive/1262666226/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="https://farm2.static.flickr.com/1289/1262666226_8121de3a3f_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="TAN-SAM Fin Stack" /></a>

I found it at Lowes in the the paint section where they keep the sandpaper and stuff.

I found it in the same section with the regular wood fillers. If you saw the regular Elmer's filler, it would be in that same section if they had it. I'm pretty sure the Minwax products were stocked on a nearby shelf.

I couldn't find it either. Then one day at hobby lobby, I was considering a small container of Elmer's "Wood Filler, Superior Staining, Best for Furniture" and looked at the directions on the back: "Elmer's latex-based Fill 'N Finish wood filler for fine woods is ideal..."

So I assumed they changed the name from Fill N Finish to Wood Filler.

Used it on a Gauchito and it seems to have done the trick.

I was having the same problem. Then someone posted a photo of the various packages that Elmers uses for the same stuff. IIRC it was on this forum. At the Home Depot it was located next to the wood stains.

The Last I purchased about a year ago, don't use the stuff personally; I got a Lowes in Waldorf, Maryland. It was in the paint section with the other fillers and putties. The small tub I bought, came in a round little tub with an orange lid. Also saw it in Home Depot in Marlow heights, Md. about a month ago, also in the paint department.
Hope this helps.

Just beware, though. Elmers has another wood filler in the same packaging that dries hard-as-a-rock. Look in the fine print for fill-n-finish.

I get mine at Lowe's, although they don't always have it. You might want to check back every so often to see. It seems to be hit and miss at many stores. Try a different location. I have two Lowe's relatively close; often times one has it and the other does not. I've yet to ever find it at my Home Depot (though other locations may have it). A local hobby store I doubt will have it as it's a woodworker's/carpentry product more suited for the home improvement stores to carry..we've just found another use for it. Have you tried a local hardware store like ACE? Sometimes the smaller places and "old time" hardware stores have items the large home improvement centers do not. I've found many things at ACE that aren't available at either Lowe's or HD.

As new2hpr mentioned, the standard Elmer's wood filler and Fill N Finish are completely different products. Fill N Finish has microspheres in it which allows for significantly easier sanding; the standard wood filler dries harder and without the microspheres is more difficult to sand. The standard stuff WILL work (I've used it), but it will make your finish work a little more difficult.

Elmer's seems to do a good job of confusing their customers with all of the name changes and revisions to their product.

Check out their "wood filling" listing on their website:

The items with "Buy Now" are probably also what you are seeing on shelves in stores. The rest of the stuff seems to be archived for MSDS reference. A lot of it appears to be the same stuff, just rebranded.

It looks like their "Stainable Wood Filler" may be a replacement for "Fill 'N Finish" - both contain microspheres.

Well now that you mention, I always had trouble with the stuff in my little tub that I thinned with a some water and painted on my bt grooves. Always dried hard as stone and a lot or work to sand. But then I had this stuff (same name) in a tube that I used for touchup that works and sands great.

Thanks for pointing out the difference

I stopped at Lowes today and bought Elmers Carpenters Wood filler/ Paintable - Sandable. It was in the same box with a package of Fill and finish that appeared to be a dark brown. It seemed as if this was a newer package for the Fill and Finish? I'll try some and see how it works in the next few weeks. Right now I'm building paper rockets.
