I used to love flying those small whistling rockets when I was a kid and when I was trying to figure out how they work (to do it in the rockets we fly), I was disappointed to find out how it's done. You can search wikipedia or the net to find out, but not really an option for us (unless maybe you're EX or possibly if some motor manufacturer decides to/figures out how make it safely).

Has something to with holding a piece of grass between your thumbs...

I know how that works. Done it many times as a kid. But is it any louder than the siren whistles? I don't think it is. In fact, positioning an acorn cap between your thumbs and blowing, is way much louder than either of these. Food for thought.
