One more option you always have, since the Athena has a payload section, would be to use an altimeter for the apogee event (with motor backup if you wanted) and the JLCR to release the main. I haven't actually flown this configuration before but plan to do so at LDRS (on several flights actually), should allow for much of the simplicity of motor deploy but the added precision of altimeter controlled apogee deployment. Either way, I look forward to the build!
