Smoke only motors?

It is not against any rule of which I'm aware to have exhaust impinging on a surface. In this way, most of the thrust can be robbed from an unmodified production motor, leaving only mostly smoke.

I think it would be allowed if a motor manufacturer would come up with some single use smoke only "motors" of various diameters. If the FX ones were allowed why not allow other manufactured ones now. Problem is need enough demand to be feasible for the manufacturers.

Interesting idea. You could have a recessed 'faux booster' motor that would ignite the main for liftoff. Cue sound of gears turning...

Of course, some motors, such as Aerotech's White Lightning motors, produce a copious amount of smoke by themselves.

A smokey tucked up inside a heat resistant tube should produce a significant plume without violating any rules of which I'm aware.

Ok, couple questions. Just curious, more than anything, what your looking for.

1) How long do want the "smoke only" to last?
* is this "pre launch" to give show to the launch.
* is this during the "up" part of the flight. (Boost, or Boost+Coast)

2) What size "motor" would be acceptable? 29mm, 24mm, 18mm....
