Removing Launch Lugs

Is there too much risk of damaging the airframe if I remove the lugs and install rail buttons. The airframe is an Estes Tomahawk, the lugs are cardboard tubeels with a 1/4" ID from another project. A 1/4" rod would be a snug fit and I am thinking a 3/16" rod might be too flimsy for an F or G motor.

Why remove the lugs? Just add the buttons. Gives you options--
