Dave, automatically jumping to assuming grift is extremely uncharitable and unreasonable.
There is no reason to believe that this was anything other than a good-faith attempt to raise money for their trip to New Mexico, and the money they did raise was apparently spent on actual rocket flight attempts.
I genuinely hope the OP doesn't come back and see your accusatory comments. Put yourself in their shoes and think about how that would make you feel about the rocketry community.

Any donations went to a good cause IMO. Those funds went for rocketry purchases, test flights and good overall experience for the students. The fact they didn't make it to the show does not subtract from that. I am being optimistic and giving the benefit of the doubt.
I have no idea, but if you think a moderator should shut it down you should report it.
