Based on my personal experience and that of another club member, I strongly second using the pre-made pigtails. So much easier than trying to crimp ends on such small wire, at least for eyes of a certain age.

I have one of those kits. It comes in handy, but also required a specialized crimper and/or a drop of solder. The small wires pull out easily when you disconnect the connector.

I prefer crimping the terminals to continuous runs of wire. As long as you have the proper crimper and use the right technique (it's not hard) the wires shouldn't pull out. The susceptibility for wire pullout is the same if you use the pre-made pigtails or crimp yourself.

I recently purchased a desk mounted magnifier (to help with the build of some eggtimer products) and I'll say this has been a huge help for other tasks as well, such as crimping these types of wire terminals.

I use the same tool for both male and female.

Works for me anyway, although I do often prefer the ready made alternatives but it's important you go the quality ready made, not the cheap Chinese variants with about 5 strands of wire and non flexible insulation. Been bitten there before.

Well, the ones listed above by others I imagine would be good, if not better, than the ones I buy. I personally buy the Chinese ones, but the soft silicone ones (not the PVC insulated). https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32823461198.html

Adafruit has a nice JST PH connector kit at https://www.adafruit.com/product/4422 and they sell a $50 tool for it at https://www.adafruit.com/product/349

And they have a wide assortment of pre-fab cables.
