Estes Baby Bertha (#1261) Basic Information.

Estes Industries

MODEL NAME: Baby Bertha Also known as:

NUMBER: #1261

Introduced: 2002
Final Year:
Designer:

Type: Sport
Motor Mount: 1x18mm
Recovery: Parachute
Stages: 1
Length: 12.75 in. (32.4 cm)
Diameter: 1.64 in. (42 mm)
Span:
Weight: 2.1 oz. (58.2 g)

Mfg. Description: The Baby Bertha is a half-sized version of one of Estes' most popular rockets, the Big Bertha. We took the great looks of the original design and shrunk it down to just under 13 inches making it an ideal Skill Level 1 building experience. The result of this engineering effort is a sky grabbing, high performance mini version of its bigger cousin, but in a smaller and easier to build model rocket.

The Estes Baby Bertha is a Skill Level 1 kit, which requires assembly and can be built and finished in just a few hours. You can paint this high flying rocket like the package or create your own Go Wild design! The kit features the distinctive looking laser cut wood fins, a blow molded nose cone and easy to apply self-stick decals. When powered with standard C engines, it can streak to over 575 feet and is easily recovered with the aid of a colorful 12 inch preassembled parachute.

Complete your set of Berthas with the addition of this mini missile today! (Estes 2011 Web Ad)

Here's my entry in the Big Bertha collection. It's an Estes kit that I modified with a 24mm E-sized motor mount, figuring that this would make my BB much more versatile - C11s, D12s, E9s, or now E12s. Also, a 3/16" launch lug was substituted for the one supplied in the kit. I added a Fliskits baffle, kevlar shock cord, and decals from Excelsior.

The paints are Rustoleum red and white, with a Future clear coat. I took some liberties with the 1969 catalog look, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. BB remains unflown currently.

Red and white Walmart Spray paint. Flag decals from Sig Manufacturing set for RC planes. Other "decals" from my Canon P-Touch printer.

I had a spare BT60 tube, so I thought I'd scratch build a Big Bertha. But, me being me, I couldn't leave it there. One Gemini nose cone from BMS later and BAM! I shall call it......Gemini Bertha

Here she is awaiting paint, motor mount, and parachute.

BT50 down scale I call Li'l Bertha. I almost had Mark custom draw stickers to look like the original with puffy lettering, but ran out of time to work it out since this was a demonstrator for a class.

Twelve years ago my Little Brother and i (I was a Big Brother) entered our club's (HUVARS) Big Bertha contest.

My Little Brother did the Mercury Bertha and I did the Gemini Bertha.

The Gemini nose cone is just a Big Bertha cone with a wood dowel, slightly tapered, glued on the top.

My Bertha family,
L to R: Mini-Bertha (clone, Excelsior decals), BerTha-50 (BT-50 based downscale), Little Bertha (BT-5 based downscale), Big Bertha, Ranger (cloned w/ BB parts), Baby Bertha, Super Bertha (clone)

That's a nice shot and I appreciate the contribution.

Would you mind identifying them so we can sure of which variant we are looking at?

Sure thing, I edited the post to identify each one. I'm planning BT-55 and BT-70 variants, for the sake of completeness.

Thanks!

Now if I can just get a few hours at home, I can resume the idexing process!

This is the 1st time I am posting a pic of one of my builds on TRF. I got the B-17 idea from Spacepirate R. I like to honor the WWII Vets. The KITS WORLD decals are of outstanding quality. This is my 6th build as a BAR and on this build I experimented w/primer only for filling fins. Fins came out OK, but I will stick to papering fins in the future.
I have been using Minwax Polycrylic Gloss as a clear coat. It always comes out "bumpy" and dosn't level out. I used Duplicolor Paint on this build, any suggestions for a clear coat? I am a little leary of using future right now:y:.

Flew the Big Betha on a C<Something or Another>   to a Altimeter Two recorded 287' (87m). Chute popped right after apogee for a great flight.

Caught a nice photo.

Here are a couple of nice Ranger/Big Bertha derivatives which flew at the recent TTRA launch:

Ken Siler built the upscale Big Bertha. I was about to leave when I saw Ken carrying the Big Big Bertha. I decided I had to stay to see it fly.

Earlier in the day, Chris Michielssen (hcmbanjo) flew his Big Gertha - sort of a Ranger/Bertha cross-over.

-- Roger

NARAM 55 flight. If you look closely you can see that I only got two of the three motors to light. It arched back over the flightline and just missed treeing itself across the road. I definitely lived lucky that day.
