What size wires for the battery lead should I be using? Planning on a 2S lipo.

Anything between 20 and 26 AWG should be fine. I generally use 24 AWG.

I originally used some from Amazon but the key in the connector was not large enough to prevent reverse polarity.

The Eggfinders don't use enough current to worry about the wire gauge. If you get JST connectors, get REAL JST-RCY connectors, not the Chinese clones... I've seen the cheapo ones wiggle so much that they break the power connection in flight.
