If these busses could talk, the stories they could tell! I made mine sign non-dislocure agreements --- good thing too, otherwise my chance at a political career would be RUINED!
I had friends with various 60's and 70's busses, and one friend in particular who has off and on owned many beetles, fastbacks, square backs and busses. In college, I would help him bench press the motors in and out. I had a 80's Vanagon for a few years (not as cool as some of the older busses, but still a great fun vehicle for hauling seven friends and all their gear out for an adventure).
Remember the Westphalia vans from the early 90's? Just when they got it right with those, they stopped selling them. Now, if you want to buy a 20-year-old one, they cost more than they did new! I was just on a road trip over the last couple of weeks, and at one place we stopped we saw what looked like an updated Westphalia type camper van. It had a sleeping loft, retractable shade canopy on the side, and a stowable luggage rack mounted to the back. I didn't get to see the inside. We stopped to take a look and the model name on the back was "California" which I had never heard of before. I got kind of excited thinking maybe this was a new model of VW van that would be for sale. I live in California, so obviously I should be able to buy a "California" van, right? Turns out it was owned by a Swiss couple who bought it in Belgium and had it shipped to the US for a year-long road trip. I don't think you can get a "California" in California.
