What, no Captain and Tennille or Tony Orlando and Dawn?

But seriously, I like some Beach Boys, Beatles, and some 80's pop. Tend to like things with instrumental riffs.

That said, my genre of choice now is smooth jazz: Sade, Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Paul Hardcastle, etc. Fits me just fine.

As long as they don't look like this:

....and I'll listen to it. IMHO, top 40 music today isn't about the music, or the proficiency of the musician. You are buying a personality.

First choice, progressive rock: King Crimson, Genesis before Steve Hackett left the band and they became the Phil Collins show, Gentle Giant, Camel, Egg, National Health, EL&P, The Strawbs, Planet Gong, Hatfield and the North, The Flower Kings, etc.
After that, some classic rock, Motown, soul, traditional rock & roll.
Then, most any music that's played well by real musicians (not 3 chord hackers): jazz, classical, Zappa (of course; jammed with him once at the Cafe Au Go Go in NYC).
Stuff I don't like: rap (rap is crap), hip hop, heavy metal, disco, pop.

I'm also a big fan of early Genesis with Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel. But you can't talk about 70's progressive rock without mentioning my all time favorite band, Yes.

Arrghh!! How could I have forgotten them? I don't really have a favorite band, but they're up there with the best.

Smooth Jazz:

Kieko Matsui
Brian Culbertson
Acoustic Alchemy
Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto
Rick Braun
Charo
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Fanfare for the Common Man most especial favorite)
Herb Alpert
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Jake Shimabukuro
Mannheim Steamroller
Neal Schon
Peter White
Richard Elliot
Santana (yes - Santana as a smooth jazz favorite: While my Guitar Gently Weeps with India.Arie & Yo-Yo Ma)

Hmmm .... genre-wise ... mostly early and classic rock ('50s to '70s) ... singer/songwriters ... and a little of everything else.

Favorite artists include:

James Taylor
Chuck Berry
Jim Croce
Beatles
Beach Boys
Jan and Dean
Three Dog Night
Bob Dylan
Paul Simon
Peter Paul and Mary
Simon and Garfunkel
The Turtles
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
George Harrison
Ringo Starr
Billie Holiday
The Supremes
Guess Who
Randy Newman

... and ... many more that I'll regret not listing ....

... and ... of course ....

Harry ("Everyone should own a little jade box") Nilsson

BTW ... Nilsson's Harry / Nilsson Sings Newman "twofer" CD that was released in England in 2000 has, without doubt, the greatest liner notes ever written ... *

yea... disturbed has always been a good but lackluster show.... Sick Puppies and Finger Eleven blew the doors off a small club here a few years back. But thats another argument. Small club and high energy..... or things like Godsmack/Metallica in an arena with 10-30,000 other people going nuts.

Ok, I've been hesitating to post in this thread, because I'm generally of the just-rockets-on-topic mindset, but it seems like this is a popular thread, and I do think it's kind of fun hearing what everyone else listens to, so.......

Here's a fun forum game to play:
Grab your Ipod, or mp3 player, or online music account, or whatever you use in this digital age to store your favorite music (if you do so). Go to "random" and let your device/service choose a playlist from your collection. Post the first 10 tracks it comes up with. You can add comments (or defend yourself!) if you care to, or you can just let the list speak for itself.

I'll go first....

Cholly - Fishbone
Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Warren Zevon
Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
Search & Destroy - Iggy Pop/the Stooges
After Hours - the Velvet Underground
It's Not Unusual - Tom Jones
Is There an Honest Poverty? - Old Blind Dogs
Farewell Reel - Patti Smith
Everything Merges With the Night - Brian Eno
Minor Threat - Minor Threat

Indie Rock/Classical

IE. Interpol, The Strokes, Modest Mouse, Muse, The Shins, Paul Banks Solo, Deathcab, Hilary Hahn, etc.

I listen to a lot of different music, so it's probably easier to list what I don't like. Most Rap, Country, most classic rock (I know that sounds like heresy to a lot of folks, but it seems to me that from about 73-74 onward, rock music occupied the niche that is currently occupied by mainstream Rap.)Led Zepplin is ok. I'm a big fan of 70's era metal, (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Motorhead), Thrash and Death metal, but not Glam metal. I tend to prefer post punk to punk. 80's music is really hit and miss. Guns and Roses definitly beats out Bon Jovi. In my opinion, the 90's is where it's at. Alice in chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Faith no More, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, and Nirvana are among my favorites. I listen to a great deal of electronica as well.
Deadmou5, Kaskade, Zombi, Frou Frou, Imogen Heap, Portishead, and Massive Attack are good. Whatever category Bjork fits into, I'm a big fan. Among other hard to categorize stuff I like: Team Sleep, The Cranberries, Six Pence None the Richer. As to MSP area artists, I like Prince, The Replacements, The Suburbs, Husker Du, Atmosphere, Dessa, just to name a few.

Wow, we could be twins haha...

orchestrated music is good, i.e. Tchaikovsky, Bach, Dvorak, Holst, and many others. I also like movie scores, especially ones written by Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, etc. Then I like Dubstep and similar electronic "music."

I like how you go from orchastrated to dubstep, not saying that's bad, I just think it's interesting.

Video killed the radio star, not the song, just an observation.

The need for a Video to show you what the song is about, umm songs like poetry are Art, and Art is in the beholders eye.

I like all kinds of music. but I will not eat white chocolate. Hope that clears things up.

I asked my wife to read her arm, but she said the characters aren't clear enough.

BTW, who or what is she?
I am almost ashamed to admit I know who she is. Nikki Minaj.

I believe the tattoo reads "Silly girl thinks this says something wise". Either that or "Kick me".

And I AM ashamed to admit that I think she's a riot on Idol.

Do you really have two real Mellotrons? That actually work? I understand that they were horribly unreliable and often stopped working in the middle of concerts. I read that Keith Emerson once got angry at his Mellotron and pushed it off the stage into the orchestra pit. And Rick Wakeman took his out into the parking lot and set it on fire. I have the M-Tron Pro plug-in which is fun to play around with. I use it in Sonar X2.

I have an old M400 that's been completely restored. It plays and sounds better than when it was new. It has six tape frames with BASF and EMI tape. All are less than a year old. In the old days, people didn't know how to take care of them, so there were problems. My M4000 is only a couple of months old and was designed and built by the the same people who built my M400, Streetly Electronics. It's a cycling machine like the old MkI/MkII/M300 Trons and has 24 sounds. Several of the sounds on it and the M400 frames are fairly new recordings. If you have M-Tron Pro, get the Streetly Tapes expansion. They are the best samples available. If you have a sample player that will play WAV files, you can have mine for free: https://leisureland.us/audio/MellotronSamples/MellotronSamples.htm. They are also in the free Redtron SE VST plugin.

I'm surprised that it isn't gibberish or mistranslated as are almost all Japanese or Chinese character tattoos. My wife translated it as "God be with you always". Who'd a thunk?

OK, I give, I cave, I fold to your demands !! I build rockets and listen to a little Tony B., Then a bit of Frank does the body good. If it's a bad day Mr. Avalon does the trick. If I'm doin a scratcher , it's Doors and some Pink Floyd. Buildin a kit out of the box--give me some east coast beach music. Who put the DO in the DO -WAAP- DA- BOP ?
