Yessir ,the Canadians flew them for awhile ,carrying Falcons and Genies that I know of.My city`s aviation heritage museum has two ,one outside on a pedestel and the other is on display inside.I hope the one inside has Falcons like the one outside ,so I can take picutes for scaling and details.

Did the Canadian VooDoos have a cup holder for the pilot's beer?

That is some fine looking detail, your not gona be able to go anywhere with it with out a letter from your mother!

Makes one chuckle to think that there are service specific versions of that missile, just like all the various uniforms. WASTE and BOASTFUL PRIDE!

Scott

Paul, you ever going to bring that down into the U.S. for a launch?

I am pretty sure that they did...also had a cigar holder as well....the Canadian VooDoo's were well equipped!

YUP !

My old friend Birt (used to own a hobbyshop just for models) was a retired flyboy who used to fly Voodoos.

Said they were huge fuel hogs and noisy as hell ! Would love to see one fly in an airshow !

I`m going to try and get to the museum tomorrow (it`s a holiday here, long weekend) and see about taking pics of the BlackBrant and hopefully some Falco missiles.

Cheers

Thankyou Scott !

Indeed ,I had no idea of all the branches that use it.

Never say never I suppose ,but where I live on the longitudinal center of Canada ,things are pretty far away for me ,but I plan on going to a major launch one day.

Take care

OBTW-on that map ,I`ve worked in all those places/dots except Repulse Bay !

I`m getting some good work done on the Hellfire today.

I just got back from the USA yesterday ,got a bunch of rocket stuff and a nice big 84" Friuty Chute and 70" Ultra X-Type....damn fine chutes !

Pics are comming !

Cheers

Paul...that would be great...I don't think the VooDoo gets the credit...that plane represented a HUGE increase in performance....its rate of climb was actually better than that of the F-102, 104 or the 106 if Wikipedia can be trusted. Hope you get some great shots if you can go!

Work and progress resumes in earnest today ,as it`s a long weekend and I`m also well rested from my little excursion to the USA ( bought a bunch of rocketry building supplies ,parachutes and some nice kits)

So again ,I was looking at my collection of Hellfire pictures and noticed another detail on the warhead section ,this time it`s some sort of "band" with an elongated window cut into it.I`m not sure what it for ,but I think I`ll add for detail sake.

I cut a 4" wide piece of body tube and slit it down it`s length ,then maked out the "window".

I`ll slip in a length of coupler as a backer and use a Forstner bit to drill the corners ,then use the old ZONA saw (bought another one for backup while in the US) with the keyhole blade and cut out the rest.

I want to keep the corners of the window radiused ,so I`ll need to make my cuts carefully.

I also need to cut a narrow strip of BT to fill in the band seam, but that`s later on.

Cheers

Paul.....she is looking good...you must have a good set of Hellfire pictures .....that is sometimes the hardest part I think...getting good research material to use.

**** Note****

This work was done yesterday ,just too lazy to post the pictures ,plus my camera battery ran out of juice !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The window was cut out

The edges and surface was all sanded smooth and seams filled with Bondo

The entire band was sealed with gloss brushing lacquer and finish sanded with 220

This morning I`ll epoxy the band into place and make a filler piece to fill the seam.

Rick,

The pictures I have are not the best ,I just have a bunch and sift through them and do my best to make things accurate ,but I doubt it is.A lot of pictures out there are old models and test rounds or publicity shots. Some are computer generated 3 D pics but a few I have are not bad ,but it took days to go through the web and search.

It sure would be nice to see the actual thing and take scale photos.....but I doubt the military would allow that LOL

No Aviation Museum today ,we are having a blizzard ,so rockets it is and still unpacking all my goodies I bought /ordered from the USA :D

Cheers

I have the band in place and epoxied.

You can see the gap that needs to be filled with a narrow piece of BT ,that will be next ,then filled and sanded smooth.

Where does that go?

How do you like working the Blue Tube? how does it behave, i.e. like a paper tube with furry results or more like wood or plastic with clean cutting results? mind you i do know speed and feed have a lot to do with this, but with hand tools like your fostner bits and hand sawing. i have some Blue Tube and have yet to do anything with it as I do not want to muck it up strait a way.

Scott

The band is in place and the epoxy is cooked ,as well I added epoxy around the edges and inside the window and then smoothed it all out with a Q-Tips soaked in alcohol to give it a nice finished look.

Paul....I understand...I am gearing up to do a Zooch Vostok and I have spent the past week or two trying to gather up whatever I can find on the web so I can try to add some extra detail to the kit. There really isn't a lot out there and most of the photographs are 50+ years old and not of the best quality as you can expect...will try to do the best I can with it...

sorry to hear you are having a bluizzard...but I can't think of a better way to ride it out than working on a Hellfire!!

Scott ,

The band goes toward the forward edge of the warhead section.

As per BlueTube.....I love working with the stuff ,and been doing so for some time now.If you ever worked with Phenolic tube ,it`s very much works and machines the same ,but less tear out and much less brittle and no tearing or fiber separation.

When using power tools (saws and routers) sharp carbide blades and bits work best and when cutting or drilling holes ,using a backer piece (such as a coupler or similar) and high quality drill bits (HHS Brad point and Forstner)produce nice clean tear free holes.Using cheap bits produce what you would expect ,you know the saying ,garbage in ,garbage out.

BUT...BlueTube is not hard on cutting surfaces and does not dull their edges in any aggressive manner.

As you have seen so far ,all my cutting has been done with a ZONA hobby saw (except of course for the holes) just to show it may be done in an efficient manner with great results.Normally ,I would have done all this on my tablesaw ,miter saw and router table.......but not everybody has access to these tools ,so this build shows it can be done.

With router bits and power tools and to some extent with the handsaw ,you will still raise a burr ,but these sand off easily with 120 grit sandpaper.

Sanding BT is like sanding anything else ,and does so easily with good quality sandpaper ,120 working to 220 and 320 if need be ,but not really needed.

Fear not the BlueTube ,it`s a great product ,finishes nicely and is very strong and does not produce any noxtious ,itchy dust like fiberglass..........BUT....I do like working with FG also.....love it actually.

Oh ,I like blizzards ! It`s a good thing today is a holiday for us ,as I`m working out of town and driving back and forth each day ,I would have stayed home anyway and mess around in the `ole hooby shop

I hope one day to get a start on my Cosmodrome Vostok ,so any good info you get ,I may need from you and file it away in my favorites.

Take care Rick !

Well this is where we stand so far ,the motor/fin section and warhead section put together and taped.

This joint is not a permanent one,as it will be held together with fasteners and such ,making it modular.

I suppose it`s time for the fin strakes ,so this might take awhile, as much preperation of the parts will need to be done.

Until then folks;

Paul, your attention to surface detail is always amazing.

Oh,Man Caves...I could see you doing one of those early 70's Playboy ones with a sunken couch pit. Or...a vintage "Jersey" basement bar with lotsa red,a billiards table and Sinatra pic on the wall.

John ,

Sinatra is KING !!

My old next door neighbour years ago had that sunken couch pit going on ,and shag covered boxes ,looked like different levels everywhere.

I think him and his wife were swingers :dark:

I was onlt about 12c years old ,but she was pretty hot, or like Frank would say..." a good looking broad " !

I got the fin strakes on and curing ,I`ll get some pictures.

OK, now we're get'n somewhere!

she is looking good Paul!
how do you keep all of the projects in order? I am afraid you'll glue that Mercury Redstone tower on the tip of the Hellfire!

I know ,but I think I have too many projects going on ,and at this rate ,I`ll be busy painting rockets all summer.

Once these fin strakes are on ,the rest is gravy !

I have some spare time now ,so work is getting done on the Hellfire ,and I am starting the Redstone today ,as I got the fin design worked out ,but more on that later

I did manage to get some nice little Estes kits done as filler/relaxing builds, just what I needed.

Now back to the hellfire !

Paul T

It is looking good keep it comin.

TA

Thankyou my friend ,but things have been slow in the old hobby room as of late ,but I`m back on track with this project.....so here we go !

Cheers

It`s pretty early in the morning ,and a good time to get some work done.

I will begin the day by getting the fin strakes on.As you have seen before ,they have all been drilled for two types of hardware ,but the first proccess will be to prep them for epoxying to the fin/bodytube joint.

After all the aluminum strakes are on ,I will drill and tap for the hardware ,test fit and then install after the entire missile is painted ,as I don`t want to paint over the various screws and bolts.
