What kind of hardware is it, and where did you get it?

I buy from a place called Fastener Express, located in the USA. They deal in specialty screws ,nuts, bolts etc. stainless steel ,aluminum ,black oxide ,titanium.

They sell in quantities of 50 -100 and larger.

They are not cheap ,but it`s specialty stuff ,and besides ,they treat me well ,very prompt service and always have what i want in stock.

Most of their hardware is smaller in size ,good for scale ,R/C and the like.

Cheers

Hardware... I use vinyl 'simulations'. :)
Or odd ball dabs of glue! :)

Oh indeed ,used those before.

Because this project is almost full scale ,there was a need to use scale hardware and such.

Now I know why these missiles cost $60,000 a crack !

Thanks Jim ,I`ll check them out.

Take care

+ 2. Great service. Also consider McMaster.com

I got the #3 machine screws for my Astrobee-D from Micro Fasteners. I got the #3 tap, a 3/16" countersink, and the "H" aluminum from McMaster-Carr. Both great comapnies to deal with, but McMaster doesn't tell you what the shipping cost is until it ships. Can be a surprise if you're ordering a 6ft long piece of aluminum!

Just to switch gears ,and I had to make these sooner or later ,the aft fin steering swivels and their parts.

The aluminum rings will be cut in half ,so as to fit on either side of the main fins.

Again ,I`ll use and did use my Zona saw to cut all these parts.

That little SOB sure does cut nicely in a variety of materials ,wood and non ferous metals.

Cheers

The forward fins were filled (the little holes are from the finishing nails used to fix them to the master template as they are routed) given a coat of WEST epoxy ,then sanded smooth.

Another step done ,200 to go LOL

I cut slots in the forward section of the nosecone body tube ,and now need to stransfer these to the nosecone shoulder. As you can see ,to try and keep things to scale ,the forward fins end up going into the NC ,so slots must be cut into the FG shoulder.
I`ll try and use the old Zona saw to cut the slots into the FG shoulder ,using the finer blade.

I`ll cut the forward section/bulkhead last.

Paul, she is really coming along nicely! this is awesome to watch...now you have me hooked one of those zona saws.....

I like the little clamp/stand/clamp--things---

I bought those clamps some time ago ,bunch of different sizes .Some time ago, our local "Chinois" dollar stor had them also ,so I bought them out .

I have not seen them since ,although you can buy the small clamps similar to these ,they just ain`t the same.I got lucky to buy them for cheap.

OBTW/chinois is a french term for.....well you know

Yes Rick ,that little saw is a great tool ,wish i had stock in the company ,it is just a great little tool.

I can`t believe I`m not using power tools to do this stuff ,for me ,that`s wierd ! But the point is, you just don`t need fancy tools to build good stuff.

Don`t get me wrong ,power tools (Dremel) do have a place, but a Zona and a Dremel and you`re golden !

I`m cutting the slots in the FG shoulder with my Dremel ,and then use a carbide burr to finish the cuts.

Simplicity at times ,is all you need.....and that comming from me :y:

Take care

Every time I tihnk I have a cool build idea I come back to your threads and die a little on the inside. That is how good these builds are, Paul. You make me die on the inside.

I used this blade to cut the slots in the FG NC shoulder ,and then my Dremel with a carbide burr cutter to fine tune the fit.

First I used a HSS 1/4" bit to start hole at the top and bottom locations, and used the saw to match up cut lines.

Cheers

Gotta question---gonna sound stupid---What are you using to take pics--I really do not care for others input here --so let the master respond---Don't mean to be rude but----------

You know my friend ,I consider myself an average builder ,perhaps a notch above ,but certainly no better than most. There`s a lot of people here that do work just as good if not better than me .

If I could be compared to a person like John Pursley or Mario Purdue and many others ,then I`d be happy ,but then again ,this isn`t a contest to to who`s better ,but a contest to see what you see and learn from folks here on TRF and then do the best you can ,and even then....who cares....just have a good old time building stuff and launching it into the sky ,and hope for the best.

That reminds me, I guess i should start doing RockSims on my stuff ,just in case

Wouldn`t it be great if we could all get together at some place and time and just sit back and talk rockets ? Of course there would have to be beer involved (being Canadian ,we don`t do $&^% without having a beer ,for you...soda)

I would love to come to the US during a big launch and make sure everybody from TRF is there and have a grand old time, that would be a hoot !

OBTW- I`m stating my Mercury Redstone ,such a cool rocket ,but I`ll wait until you`re done ,I want to see what you`re doing.

I promise I won`t get too crazy with the detail nonsense LOL

Take care Mason,

Paul: that magical place is called Facebook LOL. And honestly, anyone who feeds me a good soda (Coca-cola, none of that Pepsi junk) is like my new best friend.

About the MR- I did not go crazy with details either, I just took the basic shape from the old Estes kit and scaled it up. If you wait for me to be done, you might be waiting quite a while!

The good thing about living up in New England is I have 4 clubs all within easy driving distance, so I get to meet a lof of the members and chat.

Peace,
MRH

Oh yah....I won`t mention the Brady and the Patriots then

You wanna see a guy who builds nice stuff...look above this thread....SMR (Sather) we may all learn from that guy (Estes -3 Seahawk and his Jayhawk) now that`s a fellow who knows a good build !

I need to build a nice Estes kit to relax ,and trust me ,I love building Estes kits ,,cause it`s not always about high power.Sometimes ,we need to go back to our roots.

Take care

I now know where the NC and fin slots relate to the body tube, and I also want the forward section to fit into a bulkhead.

So the NC section including the fins ,will fit into a bulhead ,making everything modular ,since the real missile has all those scews and whatnot ,it works out nicely and looks cool.

I`m not sure if I`m explaining what i`m getting at ,but those who care will see in good time.

Thanks for your patience in this matter LOL

OH ,in the pics ,I use a cardstock piece and wrap it around to my measurements ,mark and ......yessir...Zona saw.

Thanks for looking

I got the nosecone and body tube all together and filled with good old Bondo.

The nosecone is epoxied to a length of BT. This will be attached to a length of coupler ,fastened by hardware ,making everything modular and keeping with the scale look.

It may not seem too obvious as to what I`m doing ,but it will all come together as time goes.......or at least ,I hope.

Cause as you know ,I build as I go ,having an idea in theory and then implement as i move forward.

...seems almost like good old fashioned Russian reverse engineering !

Take care Comrads...poka ya budu dumat ah tebe ves den....

I`m pretty much done with this for a while. It`s nice that Bondo dries quickly ,so the NC and body tube forward section are filled ,sealed and sanded.

One part of the build almost done .

Perhaps tomorrow ,as I think I`ll build an Estes kit ,Pro Series Ventris me thinks.Looks like a nice easy build.Gotta be easier than the Mega Der Big Red Max ,that was a fun build and done ,but alas....no paint until spring.

NOTE- anybody in So. Cal want to adopt me for a week ? Will paint for beer.....my beer.....your paint ! LOL

Oh ,that`s an Estes V-2 next to the Hellfire nosecone ,just for scale.

Take care folks

Sorry I didn`t get back to your question HD .

The camera is just a Nikon Coolpix ,I bought using my travel miles a couple years ago.I know my pix are not the best compared to many here on the forum ,but they`re basically to give you an idea of what`s going on.I also get a little impatient while taking them ,so I pretty much rush, take a bunch and then do some culling LOL

I know the camera can take better pictures than what I`m getting out of it ,but hey ,it`s a rocketry forum ,not "Photog Phorums"

I have the camera set at macro ,and snap away and hope for the best !

I do howeverr want to try the piece od paper over the flash trick I saw here, to difuse the light.

Take care

Looking great. Can't wait to see it all come together.

Thankyou and good of you to have a look !

It`s slowly comming together ,but I have several other projects on the go also ,another scratch build and an Estes VENTRIS (no build thread on the Ventris ,there`s enough of those already ,but it is a nice big kit and very easy to build....but those instructions are a bit of a bugger to understand....too many pictures and not enough writing)so a little break is in order.

Take care !

Thanks Rick !!

The V-2 is a nice little kit ,I plan on getting a few more and doing some more of those Luft 46 paint schemes we spoke about.

Regards
