Hey, what is that nifty pistol grip for your spray cans? I can use that to prevent hand fatigue. Is this something I failed to notice in the paint aisle?

Yes.

Rustoleum makes at least two different versions. Other companies make them as well. Find one that fits your hand comfortably AND clamps on to the rattle can securely.

I personally prefer the "Comfort Grip" version of the Rusto model. It fits ALL rattle cans and I usually squeeze the jaws shut to insure that the can doesn't go flying during a paint session. The price should be about $5-7 depending on sales, etc.

Where do you get the forged eye bolts?

I know people say that the standard ones can be straightened out by ejection, but is that seriously true? I just can't believe that happens

When people take the "blow it out or blow it up" approach, the parts fly with great speed to the ends of the shock cords and then YANK really hard.

I prefer not to do that.

They're by Rustoleum, and I have two different ones. I usually prefer the cheaper one, for some reason. But the more expensive one holds on better to some cans.

I get them from McMaster-Carr. For MPR and low HPR builds they're probably not necessary. But I have seen photos of eyebolts straightened out by ejection forces. So for a big heavy rocket, or one that will take J motors, I use forged eyebolts or u-bolts.

Got the clear sprayed on the pink. The camera doesn't really show just how bright this pink is. It looks much better in person.

I'd have to say, I have the best results with Rustoleum 2X black and red. They both cover so well. I'd also have to say, the spirals in this Blue Tube are the worst I've ever seen. If I'd known ahead of time they'd turn out so pronounced, I might have filled and sanded them. But probably not, I'm too lazy. You won't be able to see them from 100ft away in any case.

I love Blue Tube except for the big grooves. It usually takes me at least 3 rounds of filling and sanding for a smooth finish. Looking good Jim!

I just don't have that much patience. While the grooves bother me, I can still live with them.

I have not worked with BT, and I am not staying in a Holiday Inn Express this week, however it seems to me I have read that the sanding sealer is just meant to act as a moisture barrier to keep the tube from warping. You would still need to fill the spirals if you want them to go away.

I could be mistaken.

Terry

You are 100 % correct ,the sealer (I use brushing lacquer ,and brush it on ,let dry and sand with 320) seals the surface and fibers ,also makes for a good surface for priming, it is not meant to fill the spirals.

And the part that always fills me with dread - removing the masking tape. But again, the delicate surface tape didn't let me down. Look at the clean lines! Thanks again for the suggestion, o1d_dude! I also removed the tape I had wrapped around the retainer to keep paint off of it.

Other than the spirals (my own laziness), I'm very happy with the results!

WOW..black and pink ,that is one hot color combo..I like it.Only a real man can paint his rocket pink ,and walk proud down the firing line !

It does take some filling ,but Bondo Spot putty works well ,usually two treatments needed to fill them buggers up ,sand with 220 ,lacquer sealer to smooth it all out ,320 and prime.

But hey ,not everybody likes all that BS ,and I don`t blame anybody for not doing it ,and once that flashy paint is on ,who`s gonna notice ,right ?

Besides ,at least you can paint this time of year.......it`s just not fair......not fair at all !!

Good show Jim !

Paint didn't Win this Time!
Qquake2k you won!!!

Yep ,and Jim thought paint was going to make the world blow up yesterday, or was it the Mayans ,well anyway........

We have a winner..ding...ding...ding...ding...ding

Nice color scheme, Jim. Looks familiar in a way...

Glad the delicate surfaces tape is working for you.

I was kind of thinking you were going to do the whole fin can in pink and the rest of the airframe in black. That's what I'm doing on Madcow Skwat.

@Paul T. Fluoro pink is a wonderful color. There is nothing in nature that it blends with so it's an excellent choice for ease of rocket retrieval. As an athlete I have a lot of training wear and recently I purchased a pair of UnderAmour fluoro pink Allsport knee socks which are now, of course, my rocket socks.

Thanks Paul! Unfortunately, the choice of fluorescent pink wasn't due to my manliness, it's simple visibility. I'm hoping it'll show up better on the ground. I might be tempted to fill the spirals if I ever use Blue Tube again, but my next two projects are going to be plain ol' LOC tubing.

Finally! I have had few paint victories, that's for sure. :eyeroll:

If the world does explode on the 21st, it'll still be paint's fault!

Yeah, it looks vaguely familiar to me too. Wonder where I've seen that before...

Honestly, I didn't think about painting the fin can pink. From the beginning, I've been planning on painting just the fins. Hot pink socks? They don't clash with your kilt, do they?

When's the planned maiden flight for this one?

I'm planning for the first test flight on January 5. It won't be the mile high attempt, I'll be shooting for around 3000ft. If it goes well, I might make the mile high attempt on January 12, if the weather conditions are right.
