I may be reading too much into Curtis' refund statement, but he said that he would no longer sell to the rocketry community. Wondering if that means that he'll be selling to vendors. I can't see him throwing away all the molds and mandrels used to make rocket-specific parts.

He treated vendors just as poorly as he treated individuals. Many examples shared over the years. One vendor parked outside his shop with the sheriff on speed dial until the order was completed.

Hey, if they actually stay out of the rocketry business, does that mean we are looking at a future TRF with no complaining-about-Curtis threads? Would it really even still be TRF at that point?
Look for CT to return to the rocket community, with hat in hand, when the government and industrial contracts run out.

........I wonder if another provider who offers similar products (e.g. Tim/Wildman) could purchase the tooling that Curtis was using to produce his FWFG parts (thinking of the mandrels for nosecones/tailcones specifically)?
In short, I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Since the debacle of a few years ago, Curtis has picked up commercial contracts that are (reportedly) more lucrative than anything rocketry. Simply put, he has continued, and will most likely continue, to produce fiberglass, just not for rocketry as a direct supplier.

In any case, Tim/Wildman has his own source, and has recently taken over as the supplier of fiberglass components/kitting for MadCow. Reportedly (from 2 different independent sources), this has thrown Curtis into somewhat of a tissy fit for a variety of reason, not least of which is that he no longer has leverage to re-purchase the rights to the designs that he sold to MC when they purchased the RW line years ago.

So the likelihood of him selling anything to Tim is also reportedly nil. But then again, there are also folks that have been hit objects falling from orbit, so the chances aren't 100% against it? :)

In any case, there is no doubt that Ken Allen will definitely also continue to be on the losing end. The stories he tells about his dealings with Curtis, both business and personal, would drive most vendors out of business. I've known Kenny for almost 10 years now, and he's the very soul of optimism and second chances.

We the rocketry community will now be without a source for conical (etc.) FWFG nose cones. What you see at Wildman will be what you can get.

Also Rocketman Parachutes bought from Curtis for his fiberglass parts. I know there are a few threads of people "irritated" with Buddy at Rocketman for late deliveries. Buddy has said he was waiting for nosecones from Curtis....

(May try to link those threads here, so those waiting for kits from Rocketman, can talk to Buddy, and look into options.)

My advice, as strongly worded as I can possibly make it, is that everyone who hasn’t received their order, and who still can, MUST file a dispute with their payment provider. Do it now, not tomorrow. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll be the lucky one.
This. Just disputed my charge for an order I placed last May 2023, processed August 2023, but never shipped. Dang, I was excited about that rocket. Does anyone have the measurements for a Lotus 5"? I'd love to make a scratch built clone.

One point I like to make is that 99.9% of all the vendors I've dealt with in the past are good, honest and hard working people. I guess there will always be that one individual who has fallen on bad times, lost their way or becomes greedy. I should of know if a sale is too good to be true, it's not!

For all the other vendors I deal with it will be business as usual. I'm not gonna be cautious of them because of one bad apple. Just be careful when dealing with somebody you not familiar with.

Thank you.
This may seem like a no brainer, but once someone gets blatantly ripped off,
they're justifiably leary..

From when I last talked to Ken, he was still heading up there to finish some orders (his X-15s), so what might be happening on his end, is that some of the molds that Ken already planned to use/owns he can. But that's just for those custom parts that Ken is making himself in Curtis building, so I wish all of out vendors good luck, and I hope you can find a new supplier. But that was a week ago, and things may have changed, but I hope they didn't.

And in the meantime, I hope Wildman and their supplier can keep up with the demand.

I wonder if another provider who offers similar products (e.g. Tim/Wildman) could purchase the tooling that Curtis was using to produce his FWFG parts (thinking of the mandrels for nosecones/tailcones specifically)?
I may get yelled at for this, but no. 😢 According to my info.

Good time for some young fella here to get into the business, be a millionaire in no time.

Quite frankly, reading all these threads regarding CW and its previous incarnations just fills me with guilt... it's painful to see all this. My wife called 'em up and placed *exactly* one order with them just a few weeks before my birthday in 2022... and it came with a week to spare. So "my" experience is good... but one data point does not a trend make! It bums me out.

RE: guilt in the sense it's like survivor's guilt. I didn't get killed... but why?

Well that looks like a pretty darn good selection / collection of nosecones at Wildman, yes? If I could just get him to make me a FNC1.325-5.1-VK-FW-MT I would be in great shape. :)

I'm sure that if anyone wanted to pony up the $ and/or resources to produce the tooling for other nose cones, Tim would welcome the phone call.

His web site lists 815-638-3200.

Going out of business and re-opening under a new name is a common tactic by used car businesses. I guess once the number of people they've screwed over reaches some critical mass, its better to go out of business to ditch the bad reputation, and return under a new name looking for suckers to take advantage of.
A local fish processing equipment manufacturer used to do this every 5 years or so to eliminate injury liability claims. Go out of business and a company with the same principals and a slightly different name buys the assets but not the liabilities of the old business.

The easiest way to make a small fortune in rocketry is to start with a large fortune and get out early.
what the heck is all your problems man? I am already working on my second million.

Well......the first didn't quite work out but....whatever.

Seriously though - Ken Allen was the VERY FIRST dealer for SCP going way wayyyy back. I have massive respect for Kenny!

I will just stay out of the CW part of the discussion but find it so hard to believe how those "issues" pop up over and over and over and overrrr

On a serious note, I have the highest respect for any vendor who can make an honest living in this hobby. It’s a small niche that demands good customer service and a lot of inventory.

You probably don’t need to take your shoes off to count the companies that manage this.

A lot of it comes down to how you treat your customers. This is a very small hobby, word gets around fast.

Someone asks me who I suggest they buy from? I direct them to people who I know will treat them well both if everything goes perfectly (which is usually does), as well as when something goes sideways (which happens occasionally, despite their best efforts).

The links thru all the menus are gone. But I went into a past order and then clicked on the item there, and the product page came up. It also allowed me to then add it to cart... so the rocket stuff is all there, just no menu pointers.

I would guess on-hold / restructuring, and they may make a comeback, again at some point....

[ As Art noted, no nose cones. They have been the biggest problem for 3 years. They are just too labor intensive, and slow to mass produce. ]
Interesting. I have an order for approx $1000 since April 2023. Curtis assurred me it would go out by Christmas. Since then radio silence.

Not sure that Curtis is in the relm of honest. Took $1000 off me and no goods!

Yeah! There are still plenty of "what are you drinking, what are you eating, take a picture of a leaf... etc" non-rocketry threads that still make up the bulk of current posts.

I fall into the same boat. I have a ton of his kits flying. I never had an issue besides a little delay here and there (even with custom work)... but I have buddies that did long waits though i believe most have been resolved by now. It's a shame because his product was great. I wish I had picked up a 6" Little John when I had the chance.
