Using Jb quick to plug a AT 24/40 forward closer to use with my first attempts at rocket candy loads. I will use a ARTS 2 altimeter for a thrust curve of the reload and apogee duties.

I am flying this in my scratch built Gallo 24 rocket, 3fnc 24mm mmt and small payload.

Don't go to Detroit. It's a war zone.

Last time I was in Detroit proper overnight we left a concert at a dive bar around midnight and downtown was deserted. We spent a few days nearby in Royal Oak right before our son was born and it was nice up there too. Detroit has issues, but there's still plenty to do in the area. The Henry Ford complex is great.

Yesterday I flew a rocket! It mostly went OK. The up part was great. For those of you keeping score, a AT K456DM will lift 13lbs of Wildman fiberglass with no problems. Flight was great. Text book even. Booster falling below the nosecone housing the main the whole way down until main deployment altitude. This is where the train came off the rails just a wee bit. I prepped this rocket over a year ago for flight at AirFest. Then got the Covid and didn't make it there. Then I reprepped it for MWP and changed the motor to a K456DM. It seems at some point I changed my mind about chutes, and put in a Sky Angle main. Very carefully burrito wrapped. But apparently I never connected it to the quick link...:mad:  SO, main charges go off and out comes the main and just stays a little bunched up and floats off on it's own...:mad: The rocket comes down on the 24" drogue and sticks the landing (5" Goblin fins can really penetrate the ground). No damage done to the rocket. And chute didn't drift too far away to be recovered. My pride... Well... :dontknow:

...and here is the almost finished interstage coupler. Still need to drill some holes for the altimeter to breath, and the separation charge match to pass out of, but those are easy compared to all these holes. The inner section joins to the 54 coupler using eight M4 set screws (visible holes). I need to get some 6 mm length instead of the 8mm I have. The end caps join to the 38 tube using three M4 set screws each. The Y-harness is just captured by a notch designed into the rings, and isn’t going anywhere. The whole idea was to creat a 100% mechanically built interstage. The vent band was the only thing epoxied in place. I could have done that mechanically too, and had the drill guide setup, but thought that actually didn’t serve any real purpose.

The Coupler goes to the aft CR of the sustainer, and allows the motor mount of the sustainer to come within 4mm of the after end of the sustainer, so only very slightly recessed.

This design is based directly on CJ's (@blackjack2564) excellent how to build thread here: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threa...r-kit-to-a-2-stage-build-vindicator-jr.55463/ A must read for anyone wanting to try their first HPR 2 stage.

Added a few more today, yesterday's post #29187, was about half of the rockets we take to our "NYE" launch.
Today I added some of the smaller rockets in our fleet. Just wondering if anybody could name everything in that pile.... Pretty hard considering that some are scratch built, but the kits are mostly Estes. This could be a contest, but I can't imagine what the prize would be. Bragging rights? I will give hints if anybody wants to take a shot at it. The big saucer was made by someone who is a member of Tripoli San Diego.

Not everything, but I see a Nike Smoke, Mammoth, Leviathan, Hi Flyer XL, Big Daddy, CC Express, Guardian(?), and Magician, all Estes.
Also a Loc Viper III, Art Applewhite Pyramid, Apogee/Shrox Oberth(?), and a Wildman Wild Child.
Maybe an Estes Skywriter at the top right, partially obscured.

Finished my Estes Quasar. It probably waited 40 years to be built. Pretty happy to have this back in my fleet. Built it as my 7th grade self would have. Except I filled the spirals including the launch lug. Which I also painted flat white. So, all you holding on to the bagged it. They just got more valuable. 20201220_143612.jpg
I also got its maiden launch in!

I'm usually doing this in the wee hours of the morning, so my "what I did rocket wise today" is really what I did yesterday.
I sprayed primer on what is only my second BT-80 build. The motor block, on my first one, failed, and the motor ended up in the middle of the rocket., so it lawn darted. Sorry, no pictures. I'll take some on launch day. I think I'm going to order some photographic lights so I can take better indoor pictures.
I've been trying to make rockets that don't fly really high, but I still want an impressive lift off. So my plan, with this rocket, was to make a big rocket and put an E motor in it. I know that doesn't sound very impressive to a lot of you, but this will be the biggest motor I've ever used.

Today was painting day. The temp was high enough and the wind low enough to finally take care of the three rocket backlog. Later I have 2 rockets that are in need of repair because of a couple hard landings a Saturdays Launch. It was a great day otherwise. No wind, sunny and mid 50's. Sent one of my rockets to about 3500' on a I280DM.

Possibly (absolutely certain) I'm getting in trouble...
Wildman Ultimate Punisher inbound (that one is gonna sting!) Bargains and sales are relative.
AC supply package inbound
E-Rockets package inbound with parts and NewWay "Vigilangle"- the Flat Boy was the funniest but Vigilangle was good square humor too.
Must...get...to...PO...Box...early!
Safely load workshop under cover of darkness.
Yikes...

Cheers / Robert

Well, there's a rocket, and a rocket, another rocket, hmm, let's see, is it a rocket? Ooh, a rocket!

Fine you didn't just want identification, you said "name" them. I see Abe, Betty, Clint, Deborah, Edwin...

One last improvement to the interstage coupler. I was able to add a TeleGPS and 400 mAh lipo to the top part...I’m especially proud of the zip tie that supports the antenna, retains the lipo, and will support the switch wires later. I will have to either feed the antenna through the front, or bend it over, but the booster isn’t a high alt bird. I don’t need optimal, just some milo insurance for Argonia. Absolutely nothing else is fitting in this coupler, so I’m done on this part.

Paperwork. Today I did paperwork. Yes, rocket related in a convoluted way.

I have no idea what you are reporting but I must admit it sounded impressive!

Sorry, did kind of pick up in the middle of the story there. Refers back to post 29199, 29190 and 29179. I have been working on an interstage coupler for a 2 stage Darkstar Jr. An exercise is trying to fit 10 lbs of "stuff" in a 2 lb sack if ever there was one. Getting a tracker in the booster was the final problem.

I spent much of today daydreaming of future rocket builds. Also spent time pondering how to complete the builds already on the worktable....

Anyhoot, one of the "Future projects" included my rendition of a 4" MDRM in "Der Stromtrooper Max" livery. It's about 40% complete.

Installed Windows 10 alongside my Ubuntu installation (and died a little inside)... however one Windows 10 install later and a few hours trolling through the opengl 3d library code, another bug fix for 3d rendering in OpenRocket's unstable branch. Someday this thing will get to beta and release.

Oh the pain..... Of Windows.
(This of course being typed on a Win7 HP x64 w/SP1 machine...)

Filled out some forms for NASA, and made a hotel reservation in Madison, Alabama. Going to Marshal Space Flight Center in April as a mentor for a group of high school students participating in the SLI program.

Working with kids can be fun. But these are 16 year old high school boys, and I think they've discovered the 16 year old high school girls. They seem... Distracted. Gee, what a surprise. :eyepop:

Not.

Does that count?
You are a brave man.

I finished painting my BT-80 build. I painted the nose cone metallic and the rest yellow. Looks great. The yellow really needs to be sanded and another coat applied, but from farther than a few feet it looks fantastic.
Now I just need a launch day.
I'm debating about starting another rocket while I wait. I've built three since the last launch and there were a few rockets I still hadn't launched then. I must have at least six rockets I haven't launched.

It's the last launch of 2020 for Southern Arizona Rocketry Association. Watch this Pandemic Lite rocket with a 3D printed spacecraft, SQ11 Mini Sports Camera, fly on a Quest D16-4 motor to approximately 700 feet.
