Hi everyone,

I figured there might be interest in a thread where we shared interesting programs we find on various streaming channels. There's some pretty interesting stuff out there, often unsung and off the beaten path. Whether it's scifi, fantasy, documentaries, or any other content, I'd like to hear about it.

To kick it off here are three entertaining shows:

1. I'm currently watching season 1 of "Raised by Wolves" on HBO Max. There are two seasons so far. It is set on a colony world, in the aftermath of a war on Earth between the Mithraics and the Atheists. Plans for a pair of androids to start an Atheist colony didn't go smoothly; then a Mithraic arkship shows up. So far the show is better than it sounds; I never heard about it until I was reading some random review of it on my phone.

2. Strange Angel, on Paramount Plus. I've got a whole thread on this show somewhere here in the Watering Hole. All I can say is that if you'll just watch one show this year that combines rocketry with the faith of Thelema, make it this one. It's a shame it was discontinued following a very short season 2.

3. Tales from the Loop, on Amazon Prime. A really touching series, focused on "The Loop" which is a physics research installation. Lots of weird things happen, somewhat interconnected though each episode is unique on its own.

Very often I stumble on random stuff that's better than the more heavily advertised stuff. What fun things have you found?

1. My wife and I are into Raised By Wolves. It is a very strange show. But I like strange. The symbolism is off the charts.

3. I tried to watch Tales from the Loop when it was first released on Amazon. But I couldn’t get into it. I gave up after episode 3.

I loved Tales From The Loop! Two others to consider are Vast of Night and Coherence. Not the same type of storyline but similar. Coherence kind of freaked me out a little. Worth the time.

We’re also watching Our Flag Means Death on HBOMax, a comedy about a gentleman pirate. He’s a fop who’s in way over his head, as he tries to live the pirate life in the early 1700s. It’s from Taika Waititi, who also created What We Do In The Shadows, a very funny mockumentary about vampires Living in New Zealand.

We also just finished up a documentary about The Barkley Marathons called The Race That Eats Its Young. The Barkley Marathons is a 100+/- mile trail race in the Tennessee mountains that changes its course every year but is in roughly the same area. Only 40 or so people are admitted to run it every year. In it’s 36-year history, only 15 people have completed it. (When the doc was filmed 10 years ago, only 10 people had finished it.) The race has a lot of quirks, mostly because of the race organizer. Runners don’t know the exact time the race will start until 1 hour before. The entrance fee is $1.60, etc. The movie is on YouTube.

Halt and Catch Fire was absolutely fantastic. It's a fictional take on the PC revolution in the 80s and growth of the internet in the 90s.
Remember the episode where they fly rockets? I helped build them, along with other members of our club.

I really liked that show. I hadn’t heard of it until we helped them out, so it was a nice find. Really loved the 3rd and 4th season.

I just watched an episode of "The Darkside of the 90s" produced by Vice on Hulu talking about the rise of Grunge in Seattle and the impact Sub Pop records had on the scene at the time and how they shaped rock music.

Now I'm watching another episode of the same series talking about the Heavens Gate and Branch Davidian cults.

Black Mirror on Netflix. Take todays tech or social media and extend it believably in a bad direction. Each episode stands alone. Some really scary directions are taken.

You will probably need to skip or work through the first episode that deals with a politician being blackmailed. It gets better after that.

I would really recommend the episode Metalhead as a good one, but there are so many good stories.

My wife turned me on to “The marvelous Mrs Maisel” on Amazon prime. Not a typical guy show but I find it entertaining.

Interesting! I couldn't get into Wheel of Time. But, a new LOTR show? Hadn't heard it was coming. Reboot, or extension from the movies?

Pre-Fellowship/Two Towers/Return. I’m hoping it includes Numenor and the Ainur , particularly Melkor/Morgoth, who was the original evil one of whom Sauron was his Lieutenant.

Some good stuff here.

Dark is high quality but I struggled to get through season 2 and am holding off on 3 for a while. Glitch was one I thought would be great but I bailed after about 5 episodes. Is it worth making another effort? Some shows just take time...

You is one of my favorite shows. Can't wait until season 4 comes out.

The Haunting series (Hill House, Bly Manor seasons) is stuff I really liked a lot.

We liked Glitch and would be really waiting in anticipation as each episode came out.

Dark could get a bit hard to follow sometimes, especially for my wife.

You is surprising in that each season is completely different from the earlier ones. Lots of plot twists.

Just read more, the show is called The Rings of Power, and it doesn’t go back as far as I had hoped; though, it will have Morgoth with Sauron as his Lieutenant. Also, Galadriel, Elrond, Durin, Gil Galad, and it will encompass the making of the Rings of Power obviously.

It is due to start September 2.

Another one: The OA, on Netflix. A weird series that's hard to describe, but it got stronger as it progressed through season two. Unfortunately it was cancelled after sort of a cliff hanger finale.

The Alpinist is a great movie on Netflix if you like climbing … Even if you don't like climbing you should watch it.
