I've 2 and am in the UK so they are the 868MHz version. Listed as long range (25 mile).

I want to do a really simple test at distance between them

1 to be a receive with say an LED output

The other to be the transmitter via a push button.

Something like this video

XBEEs are pretty easy to work with. The push button would just apply voltage to the RX pin on the transmitting XBEE. The LED would just be between TX and ground. You can just as easily send a serial signal, like the output of a GPS chip to the RX pin on the transmitter and read it on the TX pin of the receiver. Get an FTDI to USB adapter, open a serial port on your computer and see the GPS output at the receiver end. There is some setup work using the XBEE software to pair the two devices. After that good to go. I have not worked with the XBEE Mesh versions, just the PRO Series 1 versions.
