I thinking about building a 1/2 scale Harpoon as a winter project. This will be my first scratch built but I have built plenty of scratch RC models. I'm thinking that I will use a 54 mm center and three 38 mm motors to push this thing.

Any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone been down this road with any success? Or could someone just point me in the right direction to begin my research.

Thanks for all the help.
Dennis

I am building a 90% Harpoon, a friend flies a 50% harpoon, it flies great. I am passing on a warning I was given, if it is breezy, with the forward wings, fins, you have to have a pretty hard hitting motor to keep it heading straight. I have a Loki 10,000ns case that I am trying to decide on a load for, either a fast blue, or a fast poured sparky motor.

I used the 30% plans that Carl T posted on EMRR as a starting point,,,,, if you are early in your planning, you may want to take a look at them. I may lengthen mine slightly for stability reasons.

Tom,

I am glad you found the article at EMRR useful. I had posted a step by step build photo session on the Harpoon while I was building it a while back; pics can be found here and hopefully they may help you out a bit with your build. I also still have all the decal sheets so you can upscale them if you want.

I too have plans for both a 1/2 Scale and full scale model and planned on working on one of them this winter, if time permits. Let me know how you all make out...this missile is one of my favorites and there is just so much that can be done with it! If you are worried about stability, a longer SLAM version could be built. As far as flight goes, mine weighed in at 7 1/2 lbs and flew great on everything from I211W's on up.

Good luck,

Carl

Carl,

That pic is amazing, the only place you went wrong was the launch lugs, make yours look like the bomb rack eyes and you could swap one and the navy would never know the difference. You may to add a little weight to it though.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULL!!!!!! I am going to build mine, hopefully get it in paint before the weather turns, and fly it. I don't think I have the patience for that much detail. I have enlarged the fins by .50" and pretty much looks like if I go to 13ft I can get the stability, and 99% of people will never know the diff. I may go stripes but not all the rivots ect.

All your rockets that I have seen pics of are museum quality, Harpoon, HARM and AMRAAM. You are a master at detail for sure.

Looks like a few of us will be proceeding with the Harpoon this winter. I am glad I asked. I hope to keep everyone up to date with progess including pictures as time permits. Based on what I am hearing I think I may build a 3 or 4ing test before I go full 1/2 scales. I originally was thinking of using a Quest Harpoon and upscaling from that but I now I am not sure. For those of you who have already built this rocket it sounds like there are two critical areas. -- The fins probably need to be adjusted from scale and selection of the right motor is even more critical on this rocket. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dennis

lovs3fly,

If you want buzz down to the eastern shore of MD for one of our launches, I will get my friend to bring his 50% for you to check out, of course you would be welcome to fly with us, check out our sitehttps://www.mdrocketry.org

Tom,

Thanks for the invite. I had the pleasure of visiting with your group this past August. What a great site at the sod farm and just a great group of people. I brought my son down and he can't wait to go back.

I would really like to see your friends project. I am looking for all the help I can get. I will let you know if I can make the next launch.

Thanks again,
Dennis

Cool,
Glad you could make it down, with my work schedule, new baby ect I haven't been to the sod farm this year,, there is a launch there 10-2 & 3, but I have relatives coming in from out of state and will miss that launch too.

The sod farm is our small field, we fly in Price MD when the Higgs Brothers get their crops out, also in Rhodesdale MD.
Augie Gray has the 50% harpoon, he is getting all his docs to me, I can copy them for you when I get them.
