Why People Spank...

Don't get me wrong... I don't condone spanking children. What adults do to each other (with consent) is on them. That said, I can think of a few people who would benefit if they had their brains paddled back to where it belongs.

Amazing how things change.
I will admit that I did spank my first born. (he’s 41 now)
I have not and could not conceive spanking my soon to be 8 YO.

When I was in middle school you could get paddled for most infractions. The paddles the teachers had were 1/2" solid wood with holes drilled in them, they looked like Cricket bats, IIRC. I got one whack for being on the basketball court with my street shoes on. On another occasion the whole class got a whack for not turning in our homework. The whole class, 30 something kids. Even the straight A kids got whacked. The teacher was a lady. She found a male teacher to administer the whacks. If you swore you would have to sit in the office with a bar of soap in your mouth. They also had a 5" artillery shell you had to hold in your arms like a baby if you were really bad. In high school I don't remember any paddling. I know the guys in woodshop made some. Maybe middle school knocked my brain back up stairs.

Same here, what works on one child wont necessarily work on the others.
Yup! I was spanked or paddled more than a few times while growing up in the 1960's and '70's. It certainly worked on me!

Now when my first and only child was born in 1999, I attempted to apply the same "discipline" that I had received, and it was a total failure! She was so intelligent AND stubborn while a child that her attitude was more like "Is that the best ya got???" Only taking away something from her that she dearly loved had any real effect, so spanking/paddling is NOT for everyone, but for many I still believe it can work! Just depends on the child...

Spanked my daughter once. She was about 7 years old. I said something she didn't like. I don't recall exactly what it was. She slapped me on the butt. So, I spanked her back just a little harder than she hit me. Her eyes popped out of her head. She reached back and hit me a little harder. I returned the slap on the butt once again, just a little harder than her slap. I said "We can do this all day. Im a lot bigger and stronger than you, and this doesnt even hurt me. Don't ever hit someone, because there is always someone that can hit you back harder." She wound up and gave me her best shot. Once again, she got a slightly harder slap. Frustrated, she stormed out of the room. That was the last time she ever hit anyone, at least to my knowledge.

I'd likely be in prison today if it hadn't been for the skillful use of a paddle at the hands of the School Principal and of the P.E. Teacher.

All things in moderation. Sometimes the rambunctious level needs adjustment.

Never got spanked at home (I was the "good" child... or so they thought), but I got a pretty good whack one time in PE. Another guy and I got in a fight on the basketball court after my arm came out and whacked him in the face (which was pretty funny because he had six inches on me), the coaches escorted us into the office where we both got good whacks with a paddleball paddle. Everybody else know exactly what happened afterwards, because in the the showers they could see the big red dots on our butts...

The problem with spanking is that it is usually done in anger, not as a corrective measure, but as vengeance. Controlled, ruled spanking is very effective for young children whose brains aren't yet developed to the point where a verbal lesson is effective. When we spanked our kids, they were told ahead of time how many swats they would get. They were escorted to the steps, which was the "spanking area." They were swatted with an appropriate amount of force for their age. Our rule was, if you are still mad at the child, don't spank. Wait until later.

Drawing a line between spanking and no spanking is easier than between random this and random that.

Frankly, a "dual-pronged" approach seems best to me.

A child would be taught to think like their parents, from day one. They would learn "right" and "wrong". ALL of their schoolwork would be closely monitored, for obvious reasons, in today's world. If the school's teaching deviates from the parents' beliefs, home-schooling will commence ( math, science, english, reading comprehension, accurate history ). There would be no "after-school clubs" or "field trips", either, unless chaperoned by a parent.

A swat on the bottom ( sufficient to bring tears ) should be sufficient on toddlers and small children. As the child gets older, the level increases accordingly.

Once we get to the "rebellious stage", removal of all rights and privileges, on an escalating scale, begins.

(1) You will go to school, do your work & homework, and come home.
(2) You will be fed, clothed, & sheltered.
(3) You will do your chores at home.
(4) You will not argue or act out.
(5) If you violate these rules, the length of punishment increases.

No Internet, no Social Media, no Telephone, no going outside, no going to friends or having friends over, no allowance - 1 day - 3 days - 1 week - 2 weeks - 3 weeks - 1 month, etc, etc, etc.

Once we get into the "teen driving years", we add no car privileges, no cash / debit card, etc. ( Unknown to them, there would be a concealed GPS tracker on the car. )

Also, ALL cellphones and internet activity would be MONITORED. If you are caught with a "burner phone", all "electronic access" is PERMANENTLY REVOKED !

Once you hit 18, you have a choice . . . Do it OUR way HERE or do it YOUR way, SOMEWHERE ELSE, at YOUR expense !

Good, bad, or indifferent, spanking was part of the social and advertising landscape but for a generation or two ago.
It is what it is:

Grew up in a lutheran household, going to a parochial school where my entire family has gone for nearly 100 years. My great grandfather was principal (long before I was born) as well. So, my last name being well known, meant that I was lucky enough to get my a$$ beat without a call to my parents to get permission first.

At school, I got the belt, 12" wooden ruler on the back of the hand, 12" ruler to the back of the calf, yard stick to the back of the calf, spending days in the hallway "thinking about what I had done."

At home, I got the belt, the hand, and a stick that was on top of the window in the kitchen so you couldn't lift the window from the outside.

I turned out OK. I also learned to respect my elders.

Also, your parents aren't your friends, they are your parents. That's one of the problems today. Parents trying to be friends with their kids. Go find a friend your age. Would you befriend a kid on the playground? Nope, you'd be in jail.

Spend your time raising your kid, not befriending them.

At the time I decided I was bigger than mom and no longer needed to do as she said, I told her so.
We were in the hallway at the time, she was sweeping the floor. I tried to (and did) move her aside to walk past her.
I got the broom across the back and shoulders. The broom handle broke across my back.
We both looked at each other rather startled. Laughed about it and I continued to do as mom said until I left home. (sometimes even after I left home)
We still laugh about it.
Mom asked how one of her coworkers controlled her three rather large teen sons. She told her that when the oldest talked back to her while the younger two were in the room
she reached in, grabbed a hand full of "family jewels" held on and twisted. Rather large oldest son hit the floor with mom still holding on in full view of the younger two.
She informed them that SHE was boss! No questions asked.
Sometimes other methods than spanking are required.

"Old School" corporal punishment "worked a charm". Today, parents try to be "friends" with their children. One only need to compare "yesterday's children" with those around us now and the answer is very clear . . . Spare the rod and spoil the child !
I agree. Is there any question why kids these days do the things that they do?
