This could be hilariously incorrect, but here goes.

Is the spin created by the difference between the greater force produced on the greater surface area edge on the thick side of a flat plate paddle exposed to the relative vacuum created within the vortex formed versus the lower force of same on the thin side?

With its rotation, might the airflow across the stepped airfoil paddles even provide some lift?

The Cp being well behind a flat plate exposed to perpendicular airflow gives it spool-like stability.
 
I think it's pretty simple - the motor provides the up force, air hits the blades, which are effectively at an angle, creating an equal amount of sideways force on each blade, which translates into spin.

Note, if you build either a Mega or Turbo Vortico, they need reinforcing on the bottom, to prevent cracking where the joints are, if they don't land perfectly flat, I hand-cut a piece of aircraft plywood:
