We'll be heading to my inlaws about 45 minutes from here and will be with extended family. We'll have a traditional turkey dinner--the menu usually doesn't change much from year to year. There's usually about 20-25 of us but it's a lot quieter crowd than my family was on holidays and there were less of us. No blaring football game on tv:pop:. No squabbling kids:bangpan:. No..um...beverages:cheers:. I kind of miss the commotion.

Those of you who do the turkey, I'd like to try brining a turkey and am on the hunt for some recipes. I usually do a turkey and the fixin's at home the next day because the day after T-giving is a real bummer without leftovers.

What will you be doing?

Just me, my wife, and my parents. Just the 4 of us this year. Mom is still recovering from her long hospital and rehab stay, but she's getting there. She's off of the heavy duty narcotics now, and on the light ones. Alot less mood swings.

As usual, my wife and I will get together with my sister for dinner. With my brother gone, it's down to just the three of us now. I don't know; plans are still up in the air. We usually alternate hosting the dinner between our two houses, and this year it's my sister's turn. But she and my wife have been talking about going out to a restaurant this year.

haven't got any yet, probably do the same as the last 33 thanks giving days - nothing (I'm british!!):p

We make the same thing for Thanksgiving every year....

Reservations at a nice restaurant. Then go to a movie. This year we are thinking either 2012 or Planet 51 for the movie.

It's just the two of us (closest family is over 1,000 miles away). so making the traditional meal at home is kind of silly. I like turkey, just not that much.

Eat a lot of turkey over the next week.
  1. Cook a turkey dinner at my mother-in-laws and eat turkey.
  2. The wife and I have dinner with my old roomate after college and his wife, eating more turkey.
  3. Visit several other friends and eat more turkey.
  4. Cook a turkey at home and have turkey sandwiches for a week.
Glad I like turkey.

* Not eating any Turkey; to many chemicals in meat these days. Also, I don't want to become sleepy from tryptophan... well, I might have a turkey sandwich.

* No family as we just got back from a 16 day cruise with family. Crossed the Atlantic on Carnival's newest ship, 'The Dream'. It sucked! Most of the passengers were 65+ years, the events during the sailing days were: Bingo, Arts & Crafts , Bingo, trivia, Bingo, better health and living, Bingo. Plus, after leaving Bermuda, we ran into the storm kicked up by Ida. So between waiting or passengers getting on an off elevators with their Rascal Scooters beeping, sea sickness, and a general lack of anything mentally stimulating (well there was the casino), I just want to rest and watch football!

* Might fly some rockets... Yes I will and post photos :)

* We just buy the pre-paid Turkeys from our local markets. With time issues, let someone else do the hard work.

Its great being in a place were in the dead of winter, I can go outside in a short sleeve shirt and fly rockets and planes all day long!

And you paid money for that? :p Was that that monster cruise ship I just read about that holds 6,000+ people? If I wanted to hang out with that many I could just stay home.

One year it was just my mom and I for Easter and we bought one of those premade meals. It was nice and easy.

No big plans here. Dinner at the inlaws and go from there. Will be kinda quiet.

If I had only known... :(

The largest cruise ship in the world is called the Oasis:

https://www.oasisoftheseas.com/

Interesting note: The Carnival Dream actually holds more passengers and crew even though the Oasis is much larger.

2 reasons for this:

1) The state rooms in the Oasis have more square footage than the Dream.

2) Much of the ship is 'empty' space; Ice Rink, Climbing walls, open court yard (the middle of the Oasis is hollowed out serveral decks down, balconies look down into a court yard/park ... yep its HUGE!!!

The only way I would spend 16 days on a ship would be if I was still in uniform and the it was a warship. You musta done something reallllly bad to deserve an Atlantic crossing during storm season.

Thanksgiving? What's that? I hear it is some sort of holiday, time off, something like that..:confused2:

My plans? The dreaded 'w' word..Yep, work..:( Oh well, I have that weekend off tho! :D Plans for then? Hold a yard sale and try to raise some rocket money!

Aww, you're no fun! ;)

So, how was bonfire night this year?

That's the one I saw in the news reports. It looks like a floating city! I saw some of the pictures online of it being constructed and that was pretty neat to see.

H_Rocket, I've never been on a cruise either but long ago my aunt and uncle used to go with a number of other couples and they always had a wonderful time. They would bring home pictures of them being dressed for dinner every night, dancing, going on tours, etc, and she always looked so happy. Maybe that was just the getting away from cooking and cleaning for the three teen boys. :cyclops:

Other than bright white warships with 105 day cruises, I have been on two. One for seven days which was kind of fun and one for 11 which I will never do again. I like the idea of not having to think about what I am going to do. In fact the few times we were at sea were some of the best parts. A stack of books, a deck chair, and some serious power napping.

Oh, come on! Aren't you a little thankful those pesky puritan's left? Did you have Black peas and potato pie on the 5th?

:)

Thanks to some un-paid summer work, we get the whole week off. Both my son and his wife work in the medical field (he's a paramedic on an MICU and she's a paramedic working in a local traume center) and they have to work on Thursday, so we're doing Thanksgiving on Wednesday - the inlaws are coming along with some other friends and family - so I'll be spending my time "off" getting the house ready, moving furniture, mowing the yard, etc.

Thursday'll be a football day with the Cowboys on the HD - but Friday'll be spent getting ready for our club's first high power launch in two years on Saturday! Yeehaw!

After a week from h*** (5am to 8pm most days, plus hour drive time each way, I'm kinda bushed) I've got the weekend off. Tday with the family at my cousin's house (I'm bringing the boiled custard - a specialty at the dairy where I work). Might go car shopping that weekend, maybe a movie. No rockets, though, unless I decide to build something.

I was under the impression that the British celebrated Thanksgiving on July 4th - don't know where I heard that!

Couldn't decide between two smart-Alec replies...

A) So Brits have nothing to be thankful for?

B) So, have you got any picnic plans for July Fourth? :p (kidding!!!)

If I were British, right now I would be rolling my eyes so fast and shaking my head so hard that I might fall off my chair.

So whilst we await a response from Old Blighty, let me simply point out that the annual Guy Fawkes Night, a k a Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night (November 5) was originally established by Parliament via a law called the Thanksgiving Act. So, in a sense I suppose, it could be considered an annual "thanksgiving" holiday (though no longer official) that is still customarily celebrated in the UK. But I could also be totally wrong about that.

I have only ever figuratively been at sea...

Since getting married in 2006, my wife and I host a thanksgiving dinner for the people in my church who have nowhere else to go. This year we will be having 6 people pluse my wife's best friend who has agreed to help cook.

It was sort of difficult at first teaching her how to cook turkey, dressing, cornbread, etc. since I am a lousy cook myself but we both have gotten better and she's actually pretty good at the non-Korean food now. Her best friend is also Korean and we will be having an eclectic mix.

I will have plenty of antacid for all.

Turkey, kimchee, dressing, pork unprounouncables, smashed pototos, kyungko, pies, lychee, gravy, more unpronoucables and lots of pepto bismol.

Somehow, it all works out.

So, traditional Thanksgiving fare, then! Especially that last item. :D

Just like the Pilgrims ate...

As for Thanksgiving, we don't have any family near us so we'll do a small Turkey and then take the dogs to a park - as well as fly some things (rockets and r/c) that day. Our club launch is that Saturday as well.

My, English-Rose of a, wife calls 4th of July "Colonial Insurrection Day". Funny thing now is that she's applying for her U.S. citizenship, before her green (pink) card runs out in 2011.

When I was growing up us older kids would often go to see a movie on T-day. Right after the backyard football game.:D

I remember those days. The men would take the boys out to the movie, usually a 99 cents triple feature (Gods, how I miss the Capital Theater), and the girls would all march into the kitchen and help Mom and Grandma.

Sexist, maybe. But it was tradition in my family.

My plans are to unload the rocket trailer ( probably have to take bracket off the walls ) and move my daughter. Once she is moved out there will be no kids at home living with us. I haven't decided if that is a good or bad thing.
