Angela Merkel's memoir "Freiheit", now up through her childhood and university years, growing up in the DDR.
Some things as you'd imagine, others quite surprising.

I got a good laugh out of one anecdote, she described hopes for some relaxing of controls in the early '70s as a new party boss took over, then disappointment as school authorities cracked down: now more wearing bluejeans to school, authorities would grab boys and send them to get a haircut.

My end-of-the-60s SoCal public high school had all those rules and more....

I also highly recommend Alsup's "Missing in the Minarets".

Just finished "A Place of Execution" by Val McDermid. Wow....just wow. It's a novel that spans two time eras interlaced in a thrilling web that had me thinking about it the whole time the book was in play. Worth a read.

I'll be starting A Canticle for Leibowitz tonight, a sci-fi story about a religious order preserving knowledge after a nuclear war/apocalypse.

Here's a book I'm reading about the history of the US government's official (and secret) positions on nuclear war
and the development & security of nuclear bombs & missiles.

Great book, but chilling.

Don't let the book jacket fool you as to when it was written. The book is from 2013.
The jacket was designed to make it look like an old military/government document.

Stealing Speed

I re-read this after about 10 years. If you have any interest in motorcycles, or motorsports in general, especially the history of 2 stroke engine development, this is a fascinating read. From Cold War era rocket development to Japanese 2 stroke motorcycle engine development and the technology race between motorcycle manufactures. Based on a true story.

I have that one too. Very good read. I showed it to one of my interns one year. He commented that he didn't read books. He started the first chapter and read it all the way through. Very will written and gets you hooked.

Read the late Bernard O'Keefe's "Nuclear Hostages" from the mid-80s... a kind of a memoir from a man who had literally hands-on experience in use and testing.
